Worldwide insurance is the safest investment you can make for your retirement.

How much money do you need for retirement?

A good estimate is RM 1 million. It can last you 20 years after you retire, if you want to maintain your current lifestyle. If you are willing to lower your current lifestyle, you might only need RM 500,000.

This month we spoke to Mr. Henry Ooi, a 30 year old agent from Kangar, Perlis. A soft spoken and polite individual, Henry was in the middle of a blood donation when we called him the first time. Henry, who has been in this industry for a year, describes himself as an optimistic person, always helpful and a good listener, which we feel are important attributes to have as an insurance agent. Below is our conversation with him.

 

iBanding: Hi Henry. Thank you for joining us. Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

Henry: Hi, thank you for having me. I graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia with a Bachelor in Management. I majored in Marketing. And my past employment experiences were in the banking industry as a Mortgage Specialist and Personal Banker for a total of 3 years.

 

iBanding: And how long have you been in the insurance industry now?

Henry: I’m quite new still. Only for a year. And I found out it’s a great industry.

 

iBanding: That’s great to hear. What do you like best about it?

Henry: I love being in this industry as its not only a career, its a good learning platform from A-Z. I can learn about some medical term, how to create asset for people, how to educate people on protection, and most importantly, I can help families to avoid financial disasters if ever anything bad were to happen to them.

iBanding: What made you leave the banking industry and chose insurance as your career instead?

Henry: First, it’s the flexible working time. It suits me better. And second, I like that I get to help others in getting the protection they need. For me, I feel the satisfaction when I manage to create awareness and educate clients on the importance of insurance protection and asset creation. I don’t consider myself an agent, I treat this career as my own business, my own path. While at the same time, I get to develope it and generate wealth for myself as well.

 

iBanding: What do you mainly focus on in insurance?

Henry: Investment link plans. I mostly focus on basic protection and wealth accumulation for my clients.

 

iBanding: Is there a reason why you chose to focus on this type of protection?

Henry: I chose this because while it gives protection to clients, it also helps to generate some cash value for them. We understand that sometimes we will face some financial difficulties, the cash value can help to temporarily resolve these problems. It’s like killing two birds with one stones.

iBanding: In your opinion, what are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make when buying insurance?

Henry: Most clients I met, they don’t know what insurance products they have purchased or even why they purchased them. Some tell me they buy because they want to support their relatives or friends who are agents.

Some tell me they just want a minimum plan, do not want to commit to a plan with high premium. Actually most of us do not understand what insurance means. We have to suit the protection to our liability and commitment, our objective as well as the well-being of our family.

 

iBanding: What are the principles in life that you live by?

Henry: My life – my choice. Just do whatever we can, and don’t make excuses. If we choose to succeed, then we have to commit to it. If we choose to lay back, don’t blame anyone when we’re faced with difficulties later.

 

iBanding: Would you share with us the most challenging situation you have to overcome as an insurance agent?

Henry: To break through my own psychological barriers. Sometimes our mind will influence our actions. We feel afraid when we want to go in a “cold market”, we fear of rejection, fear of objection.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest problems or challenges you face as an agent at the moment?

Henry: So far, to educate and change prospects’ mindset on the importance of insurance as a protection.

 

iBanding: Finally, where do you think the insurance industry is heading next year? And where do you think it is heading 5 years from now?

Henry:  It will be a booming industry as compared to previous years, Malaysian are aware of the importance of insurance. Heading to 5 years, insurance will become easy-reach and every family will have insurance.

iBanding: Sudah berapa lama anda di bidang insurans ini?

Henry: Saya sudah berada di bidang ini selama setahun. Masih dikira baru tetapi saya dapati ianya industri yang sangat saya sukai.

iBanding: Apa yang membuatkannya industri ini begitu menarik bagi anda?

Henry: Saya sangat suka industri ini sebab saya tidak rasakan ianya satu pekerjaan tapi sebagai satu platform pembelajaran dari A hinggalah ke Z. Saya dapat belajar sedikit sebanyak tentang istilah-istilah perubatan, bagaimana untuk menjana aset untuk pelanggan, cara untuk mendidik pengguna tentang perlindungan dan yang paling penting, saya dapat membantu orang ramai untuk elakkan diri dari bencana kewangan jika berlakunya sesuatu musibah.

 

Pencapaian Henry di bidang ini menjadi bukti betapa beliau gemarkan pekerjaannya sebagai seorang ejen.

 

iBanding: Apa pula yang membuatkan anda tinggalkan industri pembankan dan sertai industri insurans ini?

Henry: Pertama sekali, waktu kerja yang lebih fleksibel. Ianya lebih sesuai dengan saya. Kedua, saya suka sebab saya dapat bantu orang ramai dapatkan perlindungan yang mereka perlukan. Bagi saya, kepuasan datang dari keberkesanan saya dalam menyedarkan prospek  dan pelanggan tentang pentingnya perlindungan insurans.

Sebenarnya bagi saya, saya tidak anggap diri saya sebagai ejen. Sebaliknya, saya anggap karier ini sebagai perniagaan saya, perjalanan saya. Dan pada masa yang sama, saya dapat membangunkannya dan menjana pendapatan bagi diri saya.

 

iBanding: Apakah kepakaran anda di bidang insurans ini?

Henry: Kepakaran dan fokus saya adalah pada perlindungan insurans berkaitan pelaburan.

 

iBanding: Apa pula sebab anda pilih untuk fokus pada perlindungan jenis ini?

Henry: Sebabnya ia bukan sekadar menyediakan perlindungan kepada pelanggan tetapi juga membantu mereka dengan mengumpul nilai tunai untuk mereka. Kita semua terima hakikat bahawa kadang kala kita menghadapi waktu-waktu susah, jadi nilai tunai ini dapat sedikit sebanyak membantu.

 

iBanding: Pada pendapat anda, apakah kesilapan yang sering dilakukan pengguna Malaysia dalam perihal insurans?

Henry: Kebanyakan pelanggan yang saya temui, tidak tahu pun polisi apa yang mereka ada atau apa sebab mereka membelinya. Sesetengah dari mereka beritahu saya, sebab mereka beli sesuatu pelan ialah untuk membantu saudara-mara atau rakan mereka yang bekerja sebagai ejen.

Ramai yang kata mereka cuma hendakkan perlindungan minima, tidak mahu komit dengan premium yang tinggi. Sebenarnya ramai di antara kita yang faham erti sebenar insurans. Kita sebenarnya perlu padankan perlindungan dengan liabiliti dan komitmen kita, matlamat kita dan juga kepentingan keluarga kita.

 

iBanding: Apa pula prinsip hidup yang dipegang?

Henry: Kehidupan saya – pilihan saya. Lakukan apa saja dengan terbaik, tanpa apa-apa alasan. Jikalau kita pilih untuk berjaya, perlulah komited. Kalau kita pilih untuk sambil lewa, jangan pulak salahkan orang lain nanti kalau sudah dalam kesusahan.

 

iBanding: Sudi kongsi bersama kami situasi paling mencabar diri anda sebagai seorang ejen?

Henry: Usaha untuk merobohkan benteng psikologi sendiri. Pemikiran kita selalunya mempengaruhi tindakan kita. Kita rasa takut untuk memasuki “cold market”, sesuatu zone tidak kita kenali. Kita takut akan rejection, akan penolakan.

 

iBanding: Apakah pula masalah terbesar yang anda hadapi buat masa ini?

Henry: Buat masa ini, untuk menyedarkan orang ramai dan mengubah mindset prospek tentang kepentingan insurans sebagai perlindungan.

 

iBanding: Pada pandangan anda, ke manakah arah tuju industri ini tahun hadapan dan bagaimana pula bagi 5 tahun akan datang?

Henry: Ia akan pesat maju berbanding tahun-tahun sebelumnya. Rakyat Malaysian semakin sedar akan kepentingan insurans. Dalam 5 tahun akan datang, insurans akan menjadi sesuatu yang sangat mudah untuk diperolehi. Setiap keluarga akan memilikinya.

This month we interviewed Adeline Ong from the state known as the Pearl of the Orient – Penang. A mother of two who loves reading during her free time spent a beautiful Friday morning with us by the beach while telling us her story.

It was a beautiful morning in Tanjung Bungah, Pulau Pinang when I waited for Adeline, our Spotlight Agent for this month. I have already spoken to Adeline a few times prior to our meeting that day and I knew I would be expecting a cheerful and light spirited individual.

And I was right, Adeline was all smiles as she approached me. Even the horrendous early morning traffic in Penang did not damper her enthusiasm. Born and bred in Penang, Adeline is everything everyone says about the people of Penang – friendly and bubbly.

After a brief small talk, I proceeded to asking her more specific questions about her background and roles as an insurance agent.

 

Adeline: I dropped out from Lower Six due to family financial problem. I had to work to support my family because we have a total 7 siblings and most of them were still schooling then. I only managed to attend two to three weeks of Lower Six and could not afford to pay the RM60 school costs. Furthermore, I was born in family that values the males and belittle the females. Therefore, I had no choice but to work.

At that time, I worked in a general insurance company as an admin clerk and was earning RM850 a month. I knew agents were earning more than I was so in 1999, I resigned and contracted myself as a general insurance agent. It’s was a tough journey as an agent who was only 19 because people had a hard time trusting such a young person. But that didn’t stop me. Three years later I started my career as a life insurance agent and later proceeded to become a Registered Financial Planner.

iBanding: So do you have a preference? Or are you focused on one type of insurance more than others?

Adeline: Right now I am more focused on all types of general insurance as well as unit trust.

 

iBanding: Do you enjoy being an insurance agent?

Adeline: Oh yes! (Adeline answered with so much enthusiasm that actually made us really curious)

 

iBanding: Why?

Adeline: Because I get to meet so many people and make new friends! Everywhere I go I am bound to bumb into someone I know. Every time I go out with my family or to dinner with them, there are always people waving at me saying hello. It is a good feeling!
And I get to learn new things all the time, which suits my personality. There’s always something new in insurance so it is never boring, unlike other jobs I suppose. I can acquire a lot of knowledge while helping others.

 

iBanding: So what motivates you?

Adeline: Helping others! When I get to close or appeal a claim on behalf of my customers. To see the smiles on their faces – that’s PRICELESS! I can go home with a big smile knowing I have done my job, knowing my customers are happy.

 

iBanding: Has there been any incident that was hard on you? Like a problematic claim or customer?

Adeline: What problem? No there’s no problem. Everything can be solved with communication. As long as you are honest and have nothing to hide, give your best in everything you do. There should not be any problem.

Adeline went on to give me an example of a situation where she helped a customer who was not exactly truthful about a claim. But through her dedication and willingness to help, the customer in the end admitted the truth and remained a loyal customer.

 

iBanding: What about challenges that you have to face?

Adeline: What I find most challenging is people listening to ‘road side’ advice. They trust their friends or relatives more than us professional agents. We have the knowledge, we have expertise, experience and we actually attended extra courses to know what we are saying and what we are doing. It can get a little frustrating but my responsibility is to explain to them. Even the fine prints that people ignore. I will usually point to those fine prints and explain clearly. Only then they will start to believe. It needs patience. But I can only do my part which is to educate. It is up to them if they want to trust or not.

 

iBanding: In your opinion, what are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make when it comes to insurance?

Adeline: Listening to road side advice! Malaysian consumers are still very behind when it comes to knowledge about insurance. So they make mistakes in buying the wrong product which doesn’t suit their needs, not appropriately covered and most are still under-insured. Some don’t even realize that they have been manipulated by their agents.

 

iBanding: What about motor insurance? What are the most common mistakes there?

Adeline: Because of lack of awareness, customers always fall for the tow-truck operators that show up at the accident scene. They end up in a non-panel workshop. When their damaged cars are repaired in a non-panel workshop this will create so much problems for themselves. But they don’t understand this.

 

iBanding: How would you defined success?

Adeline: Doing a job you like and live happily.

 

iBanding: How have the changing trends and new technologies affected the industry?

Adeline: For the younger generation, they tend to go online more to find out about insurance. They do their own research to understand about it better.

My concern with the changing trend is if insurance companies do not value agents’ hard work, service and loyalty. If insurers try to convert clients from agents’ source to become their own direct clients by circulating emails to promote their product at the same time give commission rebates. Many customers want cheaper insurance, but they don’t know how to handle claims. So they don’t realize they still need the help of an agent. So I hope the consumers realize this and take this into consideration before deciding which channel to buy from.

 

iBanding: What is your motto?

Adeline: to put oneself in somebody else’s shoes. Serve the customers with the kind of service level we want others to serve us. Always be ethical and have integrity in everything we do, especially in business!

Kami tunggu Adeline untuk sesi berkenalan dan temubual kami bersama beliau di tepi pantai di Tanjung Bungah, Pulau Pinang. Saya sudah pun berbual bersama beliau melalui telefon beberapa kali sebelum itu dan tahu saya akan bertemu dengan individu yang peramah dan ceria.

Memang benar tanggappan saya, Adeline tiba dengan senyuman dari jauh. Dilahir dan dibesarkan di Pulau Pinang, Adeline seorang yang periang dan peramah. Setelah bertanyakan khabar dan keadaan trafik di pagi Jumaat ini, kami bertanyakan pula beberapa soalan tentang beliau dan kerjaya beliau sebagai ejen insurans.

 

Adeline: Saya berhenti sekolah semasa di tingkatan enam rendah kerana keadaan ekonomi keluarga. Saya terpaksa bekerja untuk membantu keluarga saya kerana kami mempunyai 7 adik beradik dan kebanyakan mereka masih bersekolah. Saya hanya sempat hadir 2-3 minggu di tingakatan enam rendah kerana tidak mampu menampung kos perbelanjaan sebanyak RM60. Lagipun saya dilahirkan di dalam keluarga yang tidak terlalu pentingkan pelajaran bagi anak perempuan. Jadi terpaksalah saya bekerja.

Pada waktu itu, saya bekerja sebagai kerani di sebuah syarikat insurans am dan mendapat RM850 sebulan. Saya tahu ejen dapat lebih dari saya, jadi pada tahun 1999, saya menjadi ejen insurans am. Tidak senang perjalanan saya sebagai ejen pada masa itu kerana tidak mudah bagi seseorang ejen yang hanya berusia 19 tahun untuk dapatkan kepercayaan prospek. Tapi itu tidak menghalang saya, saya teruskan juga. Tiga tahun kemudian, saya mula kerjaya saya sebagai ejen insurans hayat pula dan seterusnya sebagai financial planner.

iBanding: Jadi apakah fokus anda sekarang di bidang insurans ini?

Adeline: Sekarang saya lebih fokus kepada semua jenis insurans am juga unit trust.

 

iBanding: Adakah anda suka bekerja sebagai ejen insurans?

Adeline: Sudah tentu!

 

iBanding: Mengapa?

Adeline: Kerana saya dapat berjumpa dengan ramai orang dan sentiasa dapat kawan baru. Ke mana saja saya pergi saya semestinya akan bertembung dengan orang yang saya kenali, melambai kepada saya atau menegur sapa. Saya juga dapat sentiasa mempelajari sesuatu yang baru, ini sesuai dengan saya yang memang suka menimba ilmu. Di bidang insurans ini, sentiasa saja ada benda baru, tidak pernah bosan seperti pekerjaan lain. Saya dapat belajar dan pada masa yang sama, saya dapat membantu orang ramai.

 

iBanding: Apa yang memberi dorongan dan motivasi kepada anda?

Adeline: Menghulurkan bantuan kepada yang lain. Apabila saya dapat bantu selesaikan tuntutan pelanggan, riak wajah mereka yang menunjukkan kegembiraan mereka – tiada nilai baginya. Saya dapat pulang ke rumah dengan senyuman setelah mengetahui saya telah pun jalankan tanggungjawab saya serta mengetahui pelanggan saya gembira.

 

iBanding: Pernahkah anda mengalami masalah sebagai ejen? Contoh seperti kes tuntutan yang payah atau pelanggan yang sukar?

Adeline: Masalah apa? Tak ada masalah. Segalanya boleh diselesaikan melalui komunikasi. Selagi kita jujur dan tidak menyembunyikan apa-apa dan berikan yang terbaik. Tidak akan ada masalah.

Adeline teruskan dengan menceritakan pengalaman di mana beliau membantu seorang pelanggan yang tidak jujur dalam kes tuntutan. Tetapi dengan kesediaannya untuk membantu, pelanggan itu akhirnya mengakui kesilapannya dan setelah insiden itu, kekal sebagai pelanggan setianya.

 

iBanding: Bagaimana pula cabaran yang dihadapi?

Adeline: Apa yang mencabar bagi saya ialah pengguna dan pelanggan yang mengambil nasihat “tepi jalan”. Maksud saya mereka lebih mempercayai rakan atau ahli keluarga mereka daripada kami ejen yang lebih pakar. Kami mempunyai ilmu di bidang ini, kepakaran dan pengalaman. Kami hadiri kursus dan latihan dan kami tahu apa yang kami katakan dan lakukan.

Adakalanya ianya sangat mengecewakan, tapi tanggungjawab kami adalah untuk mendidik. Ramai yang tidak pedulikan pencetakan halus pada kontrak jadi saya pastikan saya terangkan segalanya. Selalunya masa itulah mereka mula percaya.  Kesabaran diperlukan. Tapi saya cuma boleh mendidik. Sama ada mereka hendak percaya itu terpulang kepada mereka.

 

iBanding: Pada pendapat anda, apakah kesilapan terbesar yang sering dilakukan oleh pengguna Malaysia tentang insurans?

Adeline: Mereka suka dengar nasihat “tepi jalan”. Pengguna Malaysia masih lagi ketinggalan dalam soal insurans dan perlindungan Takaful. Jika mereka mendapatkan insurans, mereka selalunya dapatkan produk yang salah atau tidak sesuai dengan keperluan mereka atau tidak cukup jumlah perlindungan. Ramai rakyat Malaysia yang dilindungi tetapi sebenarnya underinsured. Sesetengah dari mereka tidak sedar pun yang mereka ditipu ejen mereka.

 

iBanding: Bagaimana pula dengan insurans kenderaan? Apakah kesilapan lazim yang pelanggan lakukan?

Adeline: Kerana kurangnya kesedaraan dan pengetahuan tentangnya, pelanggan selalu terpedaya dengan operator tow-truck yang sering muncul ketika kemalangan. Mereka akhirnya dibawa ke bengkel bukan panel. Apabila kenderaan mereka dibaik di bengkel bukan panel, ini mendatangkan banyak masalah kepada diri mereka sendiri.

 

iBanding: Apakah definisi kejayaan bagi anda?

Adeline: Apabila kita lakukan suatu pekerjaan yang sememangnya kita gemari, dan hidup dengan bahagia.

 

iBandingAdakah perubahan trend dan teknologi baru memberi kesan terhadap industri ini?

Adeline: Bagi generasi muda, mereka lebih cenderung kepada membuat kajian di internet untuk mengetahui tentang insurans.

Saya lebih khuatir dengan perubahan di mana syarikat insurans tidak lagi menitik beratkan usaha, perkhidmatan dan kesetiaan ejen-ejen mereka. Jika syarikat insurans cuba mengambil pelanggan terus dengan mengedarkan maklumat tentang produk mereka melalui emel kepada pelanggan dan memberi rebat.

Kebanyakan pelanggan mahukan insurans murah, tetapi mereka tidak tahu bagaimana untuk mengendalikan tuntutan. Jadi mereka tidak sedar bahawa mereka masih memerlukan ejen untuk bantu mereka. Jadi saya sangat harapkan pelanggan dan pengguna pertimbangkan perkara ini sebelum membeli insurans.

 

iBanding: Apakah prinsip anda?

Adeline: Sentiasa meletakkan diri kita di tempat orang lain untuk memahami situasi mereka. Layani pelanggan dengan perkhidmatan yang kita sendiri ingin dilayani. Sentiasa beretika dan punyai integriti, terutamanya di dalam perniagaan.

iBanding: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

Adib: A little about myself. I majored in computer science and graduated from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2009. I worked as a programmer (ASA400/ RPG) at Manulife Insurance for 2 years and Bank Pertanian Malaysia (Agrobank) for 4 years as an IT officer. I started in this insurance line first on a part time basis and I’ve been doing this full time for a year now. My hobby is going on holiday with my family and fishing, and I am also a big fan of aggressive sports like rugby and paintball.

 

iBanding: How long have you been in this industry?

Adib: As a full time agent, 1 year. Prior to that I was a part time agent for 2 years.

 

iBanding: What is your insurance specialty and your focus in insurance?

Adib: I specialize in Family Takaful.

 

iBanding: What made you choose insurance as your career?

Adib: This line of work offers unlimited income as well as a challenging career that requires both physical and mental strength. It also gives me an opportunity to meet with many people from all walks of life and build networks.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make in buying insurance?

Adib: In my opinion, the biggest mistake Malaysians make when purchasing insurance is that they always choose the lowest priced policy to fulfil their basic needs without understanding the product and long term implications.

 

iBanding: For car insurance, what are the most common mistakes Malaysians make during an accident?

Adib: Customers always go for the lowest sum insured instead of current market value. This will only invite problems when an accident occurs whereby the coverage is too low to compensate for the cost of damage.

 

iBanding: What is your secret to success?

Adib: The secret to my success is a secret! ?

 

iBanding: What is the most challenging situation you have to overcome as an insurance agent?

Adib: I’ve gone through many obstacles. From waiting for 4 hours for a prospect to arrive yet never did show up to meeting with prospects who do not know anything about the Takaful concept and labeling all agents the same due to a negative experience he’s had previously.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest problems or challenges you face as an agent at the moment?

Adib: At the moment, the biggest challenge that I face is searching for quality prospects that could be converted to customers and the absence of a tool either an app or a system that could assist in presentation. Also in the effort to find new recruits.

 

iBanding: Where do you think the insurance industry is heading next year? Where do you think it is heading 5 years from now?

Adib: The way I see it, this industry will continue to grow and it will become a mandatory necessity for every individual. In my opinion, in the coming 5 years, technology will play the main role in the growth of this industry.

iBanding: Boleh ceritakan sedikit tentang latar belakang anda?

Adib: Serba sedikit latar belakang saya. Saya merupakan seorang alumni dari Universiti Teknologi Malaysia di dalam jurusan Sains Komputer dan telah menamatkan pengajian pada tahun 2009. Saya pernah berkhidmat sebagai programmer (AS400/RPG) di Manulife Insuran selama 2 tahun dan di Bank Pertanian Malaysia (Agrobank) selama 4 tahun sebagai pegawai IT. Bermula berkecimpung dalam industri insuran secara sampingan dan kini telah melakukan kerjaya ini sebagai fulltime selama 1 tahun.

Hobi saya ketika waktu lapang adalah bercuti bersama keluarga dan memancing dan saya juga amat meminati sukan lasak seperti rugbi dan paintball.

 

iBanding: Sudah berapa lama anda di bidang Takaful ini?

Adib: Full time selama 1 tahun manakala sebelum itu sebagai part time selama 2 tahun.

iBanding: Apakah kepakaran anda di bidang insurans ini?

Adib: Kepakaran dan fokus saya adalah Takaful keluarga.

 

iBanding: Apa yang membuatkan anda memilih bidang ini sebagai karier anda?

Adib: Bidang ini merupakan bidang yang dapat memberikan pendapat yang tiada limit dan juga bidang kerjaya yang mencabar kerana tugas sebagai perunding takaful/ insuran ini memerlukan kekuatan fizikal dan mental. Di samping dapat berjumpa dengan ramai orang dan dapat membina rangkaian yang baru.

 

iBanding: Pada pendapat anda, apakah kesilapan yang sering dilakukan pengguna Malaysia?

Adib: Pada pendapat saya, kesilapan yang sering dilakukan oleh pengguna di Malaysia adalah mereka sering kali memilih harga yang murah untuk memenuhi keperluan diri tanpa menganalisis produk dan kesan dalam masa panjang.

 

iBanding: Bagi insurans kenderaan, apa pula kesilapan yang kerap dilakukan?

Adib: Pelanggan sering mengambil sum cover yang rendah dari market yang telah ditetapkan. Ini mengundang masalah apabila berlakunya kemalangan dan mana coverage yang diambil tidak mampu menampung jumlah kerugian.

 

iBanding: Apakah rahsia kejayaan anda?

Adib: Rahsia kejayaan saya adalah RAHSIA. 🙂

 

iBanding: Situasi apakah yang paling mencabar yang pernah anda hadapi sebagai ejen insurans?

Adib: Banyak situasi yang mencabar pernah dilalui. Antaranya menunggu prospek hampir 4 jam dari masa yang dijanjikan tapi tidak juga muncul. Ada juga berjumpa dengan prospek yang tidak memahami konsep takaful dan melabel semua syarikat dan perunding takaful adalah sama kerana pengalaman buruk yang dilalui oleh prospek tersebut.

 

iBanding: Apakah pula masalah terbesar yang anda hadapi buat masa ini?

Adib: Buat masa sekarang, masalah terbesar yang dilalui adalah mencari prospek yang berkualiti untuk dijadikan pelanggan dan tiada alat bantuan (Apps/System) dalam melakukan presentation dan juga masalah untuk merekrut.

 

iBanding: Pada pandangan anda, ke manakah arah tuju industri ini tahun hadapan dan bagaimana pula bagi 5 tahun akan datang?

Adib: Industri ini akan berkembang pesat dan ia nya akan menjadi keperluan mandatory untuk setiap orang. Pendapat saya, pada 5 tahun akan datang, teknologi akan memainkan peranan utama dalam memajukan industri insuran ini.

This month we interviewed Tuan Faizul from Kuala Lumpur. He shares with us his story, what made him choose this career path and what are the most common mistakes Malaysians make with regards to insurance and claims.

iBanding: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

I graduated from UUM (Universiti Utara Malaysia) with a Bachelor (Hons) in Risk Management and Insurance. I have about 17 years of experience since the year 2000 until present in the insurance industry. Before establishing this company, I had the opportunity to work in four major insurance companies (MNI, Etiqa, AIA AFG Takaful, PruBSN & Takaful Malaysia) as a member of the management. The last position I held was the Head of Agency. Apart from the experience, I have attended various channels or classes about insurance and Takaful for life and general businesses.

 

iBanding: What is your insurance specialty and your focus in insurance?

My specialty is in Family Life Insurance, Employee Benefits, General Insurance & Takaful and Unit Trust. As for now, we are more focused on Employee Benefits, Social Insurance & Takaful, Individual Plan and Investment.

 

iBanding: What made you choose insurance as your career?

I see this career as it helps more people to increase their level of family economic value. It also enables me to meet people from various levels. Additionally, it is a good source of income for my staff member, my family and I. Even though it is an old industry, it is still relevant and it is much more needed now and in the future.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make in buying insurance?

Personally, I think that most of them do not know exactly what kind of insurance they need before making a decision. They usually are manipulated by the agents most of the time. From the corporate client’s viewpoint is that they are always looking for the cheapest rate. In terms of general insurance, people mostly look for a protection plan with the lowest premium to fulfill their needs instead of maximizing their protection.

 

iBanding: For car insurance, what are the most common mistakes Malaysians make during an accident?

The most damaging mistakes I have experienced was that the people tried to gain profit from the loss, for example like manipulating and causing an incident or accident. Malaysians tend to take the easy way out. They don’t know about the claim procedure and they don’t really want to find out. Then, they tend to let others do the job for them.

 

iBanding: What is your secret to success?

Do it and do your best. Never try. If you try to do something, it implicates that if things do not work out, you can just give up.

 

iBanding: What is the most challenging situation you have to overcome as an insurance agent?

The most challenging situation is when people do not realize the importance of insurance, especially life insurance. The first thing is that most individuals terminates their insurance policy when they face financial difficulties.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest problems or challenges you face as an agent at the moment?

The biggest problem now is that there are too many non-professional agents in the industry. Their action tarnishes the industry, betraying public’s trust. Hence, the bad impression towards insurance. We have to do a lot of explaining to regain public’s trust in insurance and their agents.

 

iBanding: Where do you think the insurance industry is heading next year? Where do you think it is heading 5 years from now?

In the near future, the insurance industry will continue to grow despite some economic slowdown. In 5 years, we are optimistic that this industry will grow more mature with the new framework introduced by Bank Negara. When the economy recovers, we can foresee even more rapid growth as people begin to realize the importance of insurance during the period of economy downturn.

Saya berkelulusan Ijazah Sarjana Muda (Kepujian) Pengurusan Risiko dari UUM (Universiti Utara Malaysia). Saya miliki pengalaman selama 17 tahun semenjak tahun 2000 di dalam industri insurans. Sebelum menubuhkan syarikat ini, saya berpeluang berkhidmat dengan 4 syarikat insurans yang besar (MNI, Etiqa, AIA AFG Takaful, PruBSN & Takaful Malaysia) sebagai sebahagian daripada pasukan pengurusan mereka. Jawatan terakhir saya ialah sebagai Head of Agency. Selain daripada pengalaman saya, saya juga banyak menghadiri kursus tentang insurans dan Takaful hayat dan juga bagi perniagaan secara umumnya.

 

iBanding: Apakah kepakaran anda di bidang insurans ini?

Kepakaran saya ialah perlindungan hayat keluarga, manfaat pekerja, insurans dan Takaful am dan unit trust. Buat masa ini, kami lebih fokus terhadap manfaat pekerja, insurans dan Takaful sosial, pelan individu dan pelaburan.

 

iBanding: Apa yang membuatkan anda memilih bidang ini sebagai karier anda?

Saya melihat karier ini sebagai suatu cara yang dapat membantu orang ramai meningkatkan taraf ekonomi keluarga mereka. Ia juga membolehkan saya bertemu dengan ramai orang dari semua peringkat. Sebalik menjadi sumber pendapatan yang bagus bagi pekerja saya dan saya juga keluarga saya. Walaupun ianya industry yang sudah lama, ianya masih relevan, dan amat diperlukan di masa ini dan masa akan datang.

 

iBanding: Pada pendapat anda, apakah kesilapan yang sering dilakukan pengguna Malaysia?

Pada pendapat saya, saya rasa kebanyakan mereka tidak tahu perlindungan jenis apa yang perlu mereka dapatkan sebelum membuat keputusan untuk membeli. Oleh itu mereka sering dimanipulasi oleh ejen. Bagi pelanggan korporate pula, mereka hanya mencari perlindungan dengan kadar yang paling rendah. Bagi insurans am, kebanyakan pengguna mahukan pelan perlindungan dengan premium yang paling murah yang sekadar memenuhi keperluan asas mereka dan bukan untuk memaksimakan perlindungan mereka.

 

iBanding: Bagi insurans kenderaan, apa pula kesilapan yang kerap dilakukan?

Kesilapan yang membawa kesan paling buruk yang pernah saya alami ialah di mana mereka ingin kaut keuntungan dari perlindungan mereka seperti memanipulasi dan menyebabkan sesuatu kemalangan. Rakyat Malaysia suka ambil jalan mudah. Mereka tidak mahu mempelajari prosedur tuntutan. Jika musibah berlaku, mereka hanya mengharapkan orang lain untuk uruskannya.

 

iBanding: Apakah rahsia kejayaan anda?

Lakukan segalanya dengan terbaik. Bukan sekadar mencuba. Jika anda hanya mencuba melakukan sesuatu, ia akan memberi tanggapan yang jika ianya tidak berjaya, anda boleh dengan mudah meninggalkannya.

 

iBanding: Situasi apakah yang paling mencabar yang pernah anda hadapi sebagai ejen insurans?

Situasi mencabar ialah apabila orang ramai tidak menyedari kepentingan insurans terutama sekali insurans hayat. Selalunya, perkara pertama yang mereka lakukan ketika menghadapi masalah kewangan ialah mereka akan batalkan polisi insurans mereka.

 

iBanding: Apakah pula masalah terbesar yang anda hadapi buat masa ini?

Masalah terbesar buat masa ini ialah adanya terlalu ramai ejen yang tidak profesional di industri ini. Kelakuan mereka menjejaskan reputasi industri selain mengkhianati kepercayaan pengguna. Kami terpaksa melakukan banyak penjelasan untuk mendapatkan balik kepercayaan pengguna terhadap insurans dan ejen insurans.

Industri ini akan terus berkembang walaupun terdapat kelembapan ekonomi. Bagi 5 tahun akan datang, kami yakin bahawa industri ini akan menjadi dengan lebih matang terutama dengan kertas kerja yang diperkenalkan oleh Bank Negara. Apabila ekonomi sudah pulih, kami jangkakan perkembangan yang lebih pesat yang disebabkan ramai pengguna yang sedar akan kepentingan insurans semasa kemelesatan ekonomi.

iBanding: Tell us a little bit about your background?

Salasiah:I worked in the airline industry as a flight attendant for 6 years with Malaysia Airlines. After resigning from the airline industry, I started my own landscaping business. I was doing well until I had to stop my business and had to spend most of my time with my daughter, who was having a severe hearing loss. While attending to my special needs daughter, I was also involved in a voluntary job as a teacher to special needs children at the same school where my daughter attended.

 

iBanding: How long have you been in the insurance industry?

Salasiah:I have been in the insurance industry for almost 2 years now. I still have a long way to go in this industry.

 

iBanding: What is your insurance specialty and your focus in insurance?

Salasiah:I am focusing on Takaful insurance and my specialty is medical insurance and life protections.

 

iBanding: What made you choose insurance as your career?

Salasiah:I love communicating with people and I want to ensure that they are fully protected by Takaful for a better future for them and their beloved family. Should anything bad happen to them, at least they have the fund to continue their normal lives with their beloved family.

 

iBanding: In your opinion, what are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make in buying insurance?

Salasiah: The biggest mistake is that they don’t really know the basic and medical coverage they are getting from the insurance company and they prefer buying a cheaper plan. Once they bought the insurance, they think they have sufficient coverage or protection. Most Malaysians are under-insured because the lack of awareness about the needs of insurance coverage.

 

iBanding: For car insurance, what are the most common mistakes Malaysians make during an accident?

Salasiah: I think, it is that they don’t go straight to the police station to make a report on the incident.

 

iBanding: What is your secret of success?

Salasiah:I am on my way to be a successful insurance agent. I just love being an insurance agent and I am really committed doing this great job. I believe the secret of success is to love what you are doing, fully committed and to be disciplined, those are  the most important keys and the road to be a successful person.

 

iBanding: What is the most challenging situation you have to overcome as an insurance agent?

Salasiah: The most challenging situation that I have to overcome as an insurance agent is trying to instill the importance of insurance / Takaful in people, especially at this current economic situation.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest problems or challenges you face as an agent at the moment?

Salasiah: It is to educate people of the importance of insurance / Takaful and to get protections as a basic need in life because most people still prefer having a good investment rather than getting a solid medical protections.

 

iBanding:  Where do you think the insurance industry is heading next year? Where do you think it is heading 5 years from now?

Salasiah: With the current economic situations, I think the insurance industry will grow from slow to moderate pace because people are getting more aware of the importance of medical protections. In 5 years from now, the insurance industry will head to a higher growth as the increasing of the awareness and also aligned with the economic growth.

iBanding: Ceritakan sedikit tentang latar belakang Puan.

Salasiah: Saya pernah bekerja dengan Malaysia Airlines sebagai pramugari selama 6 tahun. Setelah saya berhenti dari situ saya membuka syarikat landskap sendiri. Bisnes berjalan lancar sehinggalah saya terpaksa berhenti untuk menjaga anak perempuan saya yang mengalami kehilangan pendengaran. Sementara menjaga anak saya, saya juga bekerja sebagai guru secara sukarela di sekolah khas yang ditandang oleh anak saya.

 

iBanding: Sudah berapa lamakah Puan berkecimpung di dalam industri Takaful ini?

Salasiah: Sudah hampir 2 tahun, masih jauh lagi perjalanan dalam industri ini.

 

iBanding: Apakah kepakaran dan fokus Puan?

Salasiah: Fokus saya terhadap perlindungan perubatan dan takaful hayat.

 

iBanding: Mengapa Puan memilih insurans sebagai kerjaya?

Salasiah: I suka berkomunikasi dengan orang ramai. Dan saya ingin pastikan mereka dilindungi Takaful untuk kepentingan masa hadapan mereka dan keluarga mereka. Jika sesuatu yang tidak diingini menimpa mereka, sekurang-kurangnya keluarga mereka dapat meneruskan kehidupan mereka.

 

iBanding: Apakah kesilapan terbesar dilakukan oleh pengguna Malaysia dalam membeli insurans?

Salasiah:  Kesilapan terbesar yang pengguna lakukan ialah mereka tidak faham asas takaful dan jenis perlindungan yang mereka miliki. Mereka juga gemar membeli pelan yang murah. Setelah itu mereka bertanggapan perlindungan mereka mamadai. Kebanyakan pengguna Malaysia adalah dibawah perlindungan sebenar disebabkan oleh kurangnya kesedaran mengenai insurans dan takaful.

 

iBanding: Bagi insurans kenderaan, apakah kesilapan lazim rakyat Malaysia terutamanya ketika kemalangan?

Salasiah: Bagi saya, mereka selalu melakukan kesilapan di mana mereka tidak pergi terus ke balai polis untuk membuat laporan kemalangan.

 

iBanding: Apakah rahsia kerjaya anda?

Salasiah: Saya masih dalam perjalanan bakal menjadi ejen insurans yang berjaya. Saya amat gemar sekali dengan kerjaya ini dan saya sangat komited melakukannya dengan baik. Bagi saya rahsia kejayaan bagi sesuatu pekerjaan perlulah betul-betul menggemari pekerjaan itu, komited dengan sepenuh hati dan berdisiplin. Itu kunci kejayaan dan jalan bagi seseorang yang berjaya.

 

iBanding: Apakah situasi yang paling mencabar pernah anda hadapi sebagai ejen insurans?

Salasiah: Keadaan yang paling mencabar saya hadapi sebagai ejen insurans ialah dalam menyakinkan pelanggan pentingnya insurans dan Takaful, terutama sekali dalam keadaan ekonomi yang sedia ada.

 

iBanding: Apakah cabaran terbesar yang Puan hadapi sebagai ejen hari ini?

Salasiah: Menyedarkan pengguna tentang kepentingan insurans dan Takaful dan meyakinkan mereka agar mendapatkan perlindungan sebagai asas keperluan.  Ramai yang masih utamakan pelaburan dan abaikan perlindungan perubatan.

 

iBanding: Ke mana Puan rasa arah tuju industri insurans tahun hadapan? Dan bagaimana pula arah tujunya 5 tahun dari sekarang.

Salasiah: Dengan keadaan ekonomi sekarang, saya rasa industri takaful dan insurans akan mengalami peningkatan kerana ramai semakin sedar kepentingannya terutama perlindungan perubatan. 5 tahun dari sekarang pula, industri ini akan mengalami peningkatan yang lebih tinggi sejajar dengan perkembangan ekonomi.

This month we interviewed Ean Mei Yap from Petaling Jaya. She shares with us her story, what made her decide to become a insurance agent and what Malaysians should watch out in their insurance policies.

1. iBanding: Please tell us your background.

Yap: I was in the construction industry for the past 13 years since I’ve graduated. At that time the construction industry was booming. What we have been taught is that once you graduated, you should find a job in the same field as what you have studied, then you would just earn your way up and climb the corporate ladder.

That was what I did. After 13 years in the industry, I knew my age was catching up, and realized that I was doing the same thing in and out every day. I have constructed everything, high rise, shop offices, shopping malls etc. I have basically experienced everything in the construction industry. I was thinking why not change industries.

I like to do work that involves planning. When I was working in construction I did a lot of planning. Mostly planning for master schedule because I was a Project Manager. I wanted to be involved in planning. At the same time my insurance agent left, so I had no one as my insurance agent. My agency leader came and told me that she would take over. The second time we met, she asked about my job. She started to get to know me even more. I told her my job was quite successful but it can be stressful, especially when construction project is delayed or faces issues.

I did earn a lot, however, to me a job has its limit. Once you have reached your limit and can’t go further, you’ll feel stagnant. As a lady I wouldn’t want to relocate overseas, like Dubai, London or elsewhere. I am so comfortable in my safe zone. I’m just stagnant there. Then, my leader suggested that I should try to work in the insurance industry. I wasn’t really into the idea as I thought I was not a good salesperson. She reassured me that an insurance agent shouldn’t think like a salesperson, but instead share what insurance is about and how insurance can help. I finally gave in and agreed to try it out part time. I passed the exam and my leader got me contracted.

 

2. iBanding: Do you specialize in a specific insurance type?

Yap: Well as a life insurance agent we cover life as well as medical. I cover general insurance too, personal accident, travel insurance and motor insurance. But when you say specialty, I do a lot of Financial and Estate planning.

 

3. iBanding: What is Financial and Estate planning?

Yap: Estate planning is when people plan for their inheritance. Will writing is one form of it. I prefer to use insurance to do the planning. It is also known as legacy planning. For example, let’s say that there’s a rich man who has 3 sons. He wants to buy a house for each sons for one million. I would ask him if he would like to get a life insurance instead of buying houses for each of his sons. Buying a house is not simple. You would have to pay stamp duty, down payment, settle loan, involve lawyers and so on. I would then suggest him to get life insurance cover for 3 million and pay a fraction of it in premium. There would be no down payment or anything else. It is less complicated and more flexible. When the time comes, his sons will get a million each, since the rich man have put them as beneficiaries. This is the fastest way to distribute the estate.

 

4. iBanding: So this would be a whole life or a term life insurance?

Yap: Whole life and term life are old plans, now it is all investment-linked. They cover you up to 100 years old. For example, let’s say you get the plan up to 80 years old. There are 70, 80 and 100 years old plans. By the time you reached 80 years old or have surpassed it, you won’t get the 3 million. The 3 million is the death benefit. You may get around 70% of your premium paid when it matures. Of course the earlier you buy the plan, the lower the premium you are paying.

Before I propose any plan to them, I would do fact finding about the client, find out what are his or her needs. Why does he/she need the insurance? What is it for? I don’t push the product the moment I meet a client. I first ask a few questions, do some fact finding, and see their needs. Maybe that person already has life coverage, but doesn’t have critical illness coverage.

For instance, if your critical illness coverage is RM 20,000 but your life cover is a million ringgits, it is not balance and so it is not worth the coverage. It is better if these coverage are balanced, or the critical illness coverage is enough to cover the medical expenses, let’s say cancer. This is where I need to interview and do a plan for the clients. I don’t have the need to close a case immediately, because people will sense your urgency. Your purpose is to meet, get this person to be your friend, then he/she will know who you are, what you do, what is your expertise and to let he/she feel comfortable.

 

5. iBanding: What made you choose insurance as your career?

Yap: Probably it’s because I like to share. Sharing is caring. One more thing is that the corporate life is stressful. After you reached a certain stage, you would want to do something different. In my opinion, when you are in the corporate life, you will not have much time for yourself. I have a few friends that like to do charity as well. Insurance is more like paying it forward. When you find someone with not enough insurance, you will try to get them covered. If you managed to get that person covered, you are actually helping their family and themselves to secure their family’s future.

Frankly, I don’t read the newspapers anymore. It has been so many years because there are no real happy stuff. You will read an article like they’ll need donations for a surgery etc. That’s because they don’t have insurance. How much can you help? I don’t have RM200,000 or 2 million to help. The only way for me to help is by creating awareness. If you can’t afford a RM200 per month plan, at least take a RM100 per month insurance plan. It is not much, but at least you are covered first. Then you slowly top it up to better coverage when your client has increment in their salary and is better off.

I do reviews every year. I meet my clients every year and check on them, try to convince them to review and gradually increase the amount of coverage. We want to make insurance sustainable. My mission is just to go out and get everyone covered. This is because Malaysia’s insurance penetration rate is only 54%. Within that 54%, there are those who are underinsured with coverage of below RM50,000 sum insured.

46% of Malaysia’s population has zero coverage. Our government stated that by 2020, the nation should get at least 75% penetration rate for insurance. It is up to every insurance agent, regardless of which company, to get everyone covered and to create awareness.

There was one incident that happened to my friend’s relative that also made me pursue this industry. It took her 20 years to save up RM300,000 cash. One unfortunate day, she discovered that she had breast cancer and had to use up the RM300,000 in one year. It is so heartbreaking. She had no insurance. If she had an insurance, she would still have her savings.

 

6. iBanding: What are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make in buying insurance?

Yap: Procrastination and not knowing what they buy.

Procrastination

They like to procrastinate. If you can predict when accidents happen, then by all means  delay it. The fact is that you don’t know what’s going to happen. They will compare the prices. Insurance companies are now going for price war but not Prudential. Prudential may not be the cheapest, but our value is there. It’s like our motto saying “Always listening, always understanding”. Metaphorically speaking we all drive cars, but why does some choose to drive Mercedes, Honda or Proton? Because it is all about the value, in terms of comfort, quality and so on. The same goes for insurance. Therefore, it is wise to choose the company that gives you better value as your insurance provider.

 

Not knowing what they buy

A lot of people who are insured do not know what they are paying for. They don’t know how much they are covered. Sometimes it is quite frustrating. They want to cut or terminate their insurance because they don’t know how much they are covered. When I do fact finding, I would tell the client to bring out all of their policy. My strength is policy review. Regardless from which company, I will do a summary for the client on what is their coverage and how much they will be paying and I will tell them what are their current expenses.

For example, let’s say your coverage now is RM30,000, it won’t be enough. A surgery alone costs about RM80,000. That other RM50,000 has to come out from your own pocket. This is when I will come up with a plan for you. In addition, you can have two medical cards. Once you have finished one limit, you can transfer the limit to the other card, so you can use both. It depends, it can also be consolidated. It works the same. I would not force my clients, it is their choice. Since they are paying for it, they are the ones to decide whether to consolidate or have two separate policies.

 

7. iBanding: For car insurance, what are the most common mistakes Malaysians make during an accident?

Yap: Usually people will panic when accidents happen. Of course that’s normal, they get terrified. But what makes it bad is that they will not remember the motor assist number. They’ll call their friends or whoever and call for a tow truck. There is an extra cost already. I would always tell myself and my clients to save important numbers or download apps. Whenever you need a tow truck, just click on an app, the towing is free too.

1. iBanding: Ceritakan sedikit tentang latar belakang anda. 

Yap: Saya bekerja di industri pembinaan selama 13 tahun setelah habis belajar. Masa tu industri pembinaan sedang berkembang. Selama ini kita diajar, bahawa setelah habis belajar kita kena cari kerja di bidang yang kita pelajari. Dan lepas itu, kita perlu usaha dalam mendaki tangga korporat di situ.

Itu lah yang saya lakukan. Tapi setelah 13 tahun saya sedar usia saya sedang meningkat, dan sedar bahawa saya hanya melakukan benda yang sama setiap hari. Saya sudahpun bina segalanya, dari bangunan mencapai langit ke rumah kedai, ke kompleks membeli-belah. Saya telah punyai segala pengalaman yang perlu dilalui di bidang pembinaan. Saya mula fikir untuk bertukar bidang.

Saya suka bidang perancangan. Semasa di bidang pembinaan saya banyak terlibat dalam membuat perancangan. Sebagai pengurus projek saya banyak buat master schedule. Jadi saya ingin tetap terlibat dalam pengurusan perancangan. Pada masa itu ejen insurans saja berhenti sebagai ejen dan diganti oleh ejensi leader. Kali kedia kami berjumpa, dia mula bertanya tentang kerja saya dan mula mengenali saya lebih mendalam. Saya bagitahu bahawa kerjaya saya agak berjaya tetapi ianya banyak memberi tekanan. Terutama sekali jika projek pembinaan tergendala atau mempunyai masalah.

Memang pendapatan saya lumayan, tapi kerja perlu ada batasannya. Setelah kita mencecah satu peringkat umur dan kita sedar kita sudah tak boleh ke mana lagi, kita akan rasa tersangkut. Sebagai seorang wanita saya pula tidak mahu dipindahkan ke luar negara seperti Dubai atau London. Saya tidaklah muda lagi dan saya pula selesa di tempat saya. Jadi saya memang rasa saya sudah tersangkut.

Kemudian ejensi leader itu cadangkan saya agar mencuba bidang insurans. Mulanya saya tidak rasakan ianya idea yang bagus sebab saya tidak rasa saya ni seorang jurujual yang bagus. Dia beritahu saya bahawa ejen insurans tidak perlu berfikiran seperti jurujual tetapi fokusnya pada berkongsi ilmu tentang kepentingan insurans dan bagaimana ia dapat membantu orang ramai. Akhirnya saya setuju untuk mencuba secara part-time. Saya lulus ujian dan saya telah ikat kontrak bersama ejensi leader saya.

 

2. iBanding: Apakah pengkhususan anda dalam bidang insurans ini?

Yap: Sebagai ejen insurans hayat, kami menjual kedua-dua insurans hayat dan perubatan. Tetapi saya juga menjual insurans am, polisi kemalangan peribadi, insurans perjalanan dan insurans motor. Tetapi kalau nak kira pengkhususan, saja lebih fokus pada pengurusan kewangan dan hartanah.

 

3. iBanding: Terangkan sedikit tentang pengurusan kewangan dan hartanah.

Yap: Ianya lebih kepada pengurusan pewarisan, seperti wasiat. I lebih gemar menggunakan insurans untuk merancangkannnya. Ia juga dikenali sebagai perancangan legasi. Contohnya, katakan seorang kaya mempunyai 3 orang anak lelaki. Dia ingin beli rumah kepada setiap orang anaknya yang bernilai RM 1 juta sebuah. Saya akan bertanyakan sama ada dia ingin membelikan insuran hayat sebalik membeli rumah. Pembelian rumah tidak mudah, anda perlu bayar duti setem, down payment, libatkan peguam, bayar balik pinjaman dan sebagainya. Saya akan nasihatka agar dia membeli  insurans hayat bernilai RM 3 juta dan bayar hanya sebahagian darinya dalam bentuk premium. Tiada down payment atau bayaran muka dan sebagainya. Ia lebih mudah dan fleksibel. Apabila tiba masanya, anak-anak beliau akan mendapat 1 juta setiap orang jika orang kaya itu telah meletakkan mereka sebagai pewaris. Ini cara paling cepat untuk membahagikan harta.

 

4. iBanding: Jadi adakah ini polisi seumur hidup atau bertempoh?

Yap: Polisi seumur hidup dan bertempoh adalah pelan lama, sekarang ini semuanya investment-linked, atau polisi berkaitan pelaburan. Ianya melindungi kamu sehingga umur 100 tahun. Terdapat pelan 70, 80 dan 100 tahun. Katakan kamu ambil pelan 80 tahun. Apabila kamu cecah usia 80 tahun, kamu tak dapat 3 juta itu sebab ianya manfaat kematian. Kamu akan dapat sekurang-kurangnya 70% daripada premium yang kamu telah bayar apabila ianya matang. Dan semestinya, lebih awal kamu beli pelan tersebut, lebih murah premiumnya. 

Sebelum saya mencadangkan produk, saya selalunya akan buat kajian fakta dahulu bagi pelanggan saya untuk memahami keperluan mereka. Kenapa mereka perlukan insurans? Apa tujuannya? Saya tidak akan terus mengesyorkan sesuatu produk apabila berjumpa prospek. Saya bertanyakan beberapa soalan dahulu. Mungkin beliau sudah ada polisi hayat, tetapi tidak memiliki pelan perubatan.

Contohnya jika perlindungan perubatan kamu adalah RM 20,000 tetapi perlindungan pelan hayat ialah 1 juta, ianya tidak sekata. Lebih baik jika perlindungan kamu lebih seimbang, jika perlindungan perubatan kamu cukup untuk menampung kos rawatan penyakit seperti kanser katakan. Maka di sini saya perlu betul-betul memahami keperluan pelanggan dan buat perancangan untuk mereka. Saya tidak tergesa-gesa buat sales, orang selalunya boleh rasakan kedesakan kita. Bagi saya, tujuannya ialah untuk bertemu prospek, mengenali mereka, dan biar mereka juga mengenali kita supaya mereka tahu siapa kita dan apa yang kita lakukan untuk mereka, kepakaran kita supaya mereka boleh selesa dengan kita.

 

5. iBanding: Mengapa anda memutuskan untuk menjadi ejen insurans?

Yap: Mungkin sebab saya suka berekongsi. Bak kata orang, sharing is caring. Juga sebab kehidupan di dunia korporat banyak memberi stress. Setelah kita mencecah sesuatu peringkat, kita mula ingin mencuba sesuatu yang berlainan. Bagi saya, bila di dunia korporat, kita tak punya banyak masa untuk diri sendiri. Saya ada beberapa kawan yang suka melakukan aktiviti jariah. Saya merasakan insurans begitu juga. Apabila kita bertemu seseorang yang tidak memiliki perlindungan secukupnya, kita bantu dia untuk dapatkan perlindungan secukupnya. Jika berjaya, kita sebenarnya membantu beliau dan keluarga beliau mengukuhkan kewangan keluarga mereka di masa hadapan.

Saya sudah lama tak membaca suratkhabar kerana ianya tak membawa apa-apa berita gembira. Kita sering baca berita tentang mereka yang perlukan sumbangan dana untuk pembedahan dan sebagainya. Ianya sebab mereka tiada insurans. Berapa banyak yang kita dapat sumbangkan? Saya tak memiliki RM 200,000 atau RM 2 juta untuk membantu. Hanya satu cara saya boleh membantu iaitu dengan memberi kesedaran. Kalau kita tak mampu dapatkan pelan RM 200 sebulan, sekurang-kurangnya dapatkan pelan RM 100. Ianya dapat juga beri sedikit perlindungan. Kemudian tambah perlahan-lahan apabila dapat pendapatan lebih.

Saya lakukan penyemakan setiap tahun untuk pelanggan saya. Saya periksa kedudukan mereka dan jika perlu nasihatkan mereka agar menambahkan jumlah perlindungan mereka perlahan-lahan. Kita ingin insurans menjadi mampan. Misi saya ialah untuk keluar ke sana dan dapatkan perlindungan untuk semua. Ini kerana kadar penembusan insurans in Malaysia hanya pada 54%.  Dalam 54% itu pula ada yang tidak mempunyai perlindungan yang mencukupi, di mana perlindungan kurang RM50,000.

46% rakyat Malaysia tidak mempunyai perlindungan. Kerajaan kita telah mengumumkan menjelang 2020, kita sepatutnya mencapai sekurang-kurangnya 75% kadar penembusan insurans. Jadi terpulanglah pada ejen, tidak kira apa juga syarikat, untuk mendapatkan perlindungan dan melahirkan kesedaran bagi seramai mungkin penduduk Malaysia.

Terdapat suatu pengalaman yang dialami oleh rakan saya yang juga membuatkan saya bertukar ke bidang ini. Rakan saya menabung selama 20 tahun untuk mendapatkan simpanan sebanyak RM 300,000. Satu hari dia disahkan menghidap penyakit kanser payudara dan menghabiskan RM 300,00 dalam masa satu tahun. Amat menyedihkan. DIa tidak memiliki insurans. Jika tidak, pasti dia masih mempunyai simpanannya hari ini. 

 

6. iBanding: Pada pendapat anda, apakah kesilapan terbesar rakyat Malaysia lakukan yang melibatkan insurans?

Yap: Mereka berlengah-lengah dan mereka juga tidak tahu apa yang perlu dibeli.

Mereka suka berlengah. Kalau kita boleh menentukan masa depan, tak kisahlah berbuat demikian. Tapi hakikatnya kita tak tahu apa yang akan berlaku. Pelanggan akan buat perbandingan harga. Syarikat insurans sedang melalui perang harga sesama mereka, tetapi tidak Prudential. Prudential memang bukan yang termurah walau bagaimanapun nilainya amat baik. Seperti motto kami yang berbunyi: Sentiasa mendengar. Sentiasa memahami. Contohnya kita semua memandu kenderaan, tapi kenapa ada yang memilih Mercedes dan ada pula yang memilih Honda atau Proton? Semuanya disebabkan oleh nilainya kepada kita, dari segi keselesaan, kualiti dan sebagainya. Jadi ianya lebih bijak jika kita memilih syarikat insurans yang menawarkan nilai yang lebih.

Ramai yang mempunyai insurans tidak pula tahu apa yang dilindungi oleh polisi mereka. Adakalanya ianya amat mengecewakan.  Mereka ingin menamatkan polisi mereka kerana mereka tidak tahu jumlah perlindungan polisi mereka. Bila saya melakukan pencarian fakta, saya akan meminta pelanggan untuk keluarkan polisi mereka. Kelebihan saya ialah dalam membuat penyemakan. Tidak kira polisi dari mana syarikat sekali pun. Saya akan buatkan kesimpulan bagi pelanggan tentang jumlah perlindungan mereka, berapa jumlah yang mereka perlu bayar dan saya akan beritahu mereka apakah kos mereka sekarang.

Contohnya, katakan lah perlindungan kamu ialah RM 30,000. Itu tidak memadai. Pembedahan saja berjumlah RM80,000. Selebih RM 50,000 itu kamu kena tanggung sendiri. Di sinilah saya akan mencadangkan pelan untuk kamu. Kamu juga boleh memiliki dua kad perubatan. Jika satu telah mencapai hadnya, kamu boleh guna yang satu lagi. Atau kedua-duanya boleh digabungkan. Jadi kamu boleh menggunakan kedua-duanya. Saya tak memaksa pelanggan saya. Itu pilihan mereka. Kerana merekalah yang membayar untuk polisi mereka, mereka boleh memutuskan untuk menggabungkan atau untuk memiliki 2 polisi berasingan.

 

7. iBanding: Bagi polisi kenderaan, apakah kesilapan yang paling biasa dilakukan rakyat Malaysia semasa kemalangan?

Yap: Selalunya mereka akan panik apabila berelaku kemalangan. Itu biasa, mereka jadi cemas. Tapi apa yang buruknya ialah mereka terus lupa nombor bantuan kemalangan. Sebaliknya mereka menelefon rakan dan perkhidmatan tow truck. Ini kos tambahan kepada mereka. Saya sering ingatkan diri dan pelanggan saya untuk simpan nombor penting dalam phone atau download app. Bila saja perlukan tow truck, klik saja di app, perkhidmatannya percuma.

This month we interviewed Fadzil Razab from Kuala Lumpur. He shares with us his story, what made him decide to become a insurance agent and what Malaysians should watch out in their insurance policies.

iBanding: Thank you for joining us on the Agent Spotlight. Tell us a little bit about you. What is your educational background and what did you do before joining the insurance industry?

Fadzil: I graduated from UNIMAS (University Malaysia Sarawak), Kuching, Sarawak. I have a Degree in Human Resource and Development.

Before insurance, I was working as a Medical Social Worker at UMMC (University Malaya Medical Centre), where my wife is still working now. I’ve worked with UMMC for about 7 years. My role there was to assist those patients who were referred by a doctor, for those who didn’t have enough money to pursue their treatment and also their surgery. For example, a cancer patient who is in need of these expensive medical care, I would handle their financial aid fund.

For Malaysians, I used to handle funds like Tabung Kebajikan and Tabung Bantuan. I was evaluating the patients who are qualified to get the assistance. From then on, I was wondering why Malaysians, especially the Malays, they can afford to buy insurance but they don’t prioritize to buy an insurance. It is not an issue of affordability; it is the issue of priority. Since then, I realized I needed to do something to help people.

 

iBanding: How long have you been in the insurance industry?

Fadzil: This is my fifth year.

 

iBanding: You said that Malaysians can afford to buy insurance. If they can afford insurance, then why don’t they do?

Fadzil: It is the issue of priority. For example, for Malaysians, when they receive their pay or salary every month, what is their first priority? They would pay number 1 their house loan, number 2 their car, number 3 spend it on food, number 4 entertainment and number 5,6,7, until the salary is 0. Then they start using their credit card and the salary is minus. Insurance is number 20. The issue is, why don’t I buy insurance to protect number 1-7. It is priority versus affordability. Malaysians can afford insurance, but they like to overspend and start using their credit card.

When I was working at UMMC, it was not like we are not giving them money for medications, but we have to evaluate them thoroughly before providing them assistance. When I was reviewing the financial situation of all those people. I realized people can afford insurance. The issue is they just overspend. They take salary every month and don’t save. They earn RM 3,000 and spend RM 4,000. If something happens to them, they are broke and ask for assistance. That is why I quit from UMMC and joined the insurance.

 

iBanding: Was there a key reason that made you decide to switch careers?

Fadzil: There are two reasons. One is the experience at UMMC. The other reason why I joined insurance is a personal event. First, I never believed in insurance.  I was a bit skeptical on insurance. Because you see, you pay, but you then don’t get anything, when you are healthy and nothing happens to you.

When, I was riding a motorbike to Krabi, Thailand with my wife, I bought an insurance policy. While we were in Thailand at Trang Highway, just about 15km to Krabi, we got into an accident and suffered injuries. My wife had a slip disc and I had broken my right hand. Luckily, we had our insurance. When we came back to Malaysia, I received a large sum of money from the insurance.  From there I realized, you don’t pay that much, but then you get a huge reserve when you need it.

 

iBanding: What made you choose insurance as your career?

Fadzil: Personal event and flexibility. Actually this is the idea when I met one of my mentor. The mentor said, “When you’re working, you become like a slave.” And I asked why. He then said, “Working is like slavery because everything you do is for the company or your boss.” So he asked me, “Do you know what the ultimate goal of the company is?” I told him that I don’t know and he continued saying, “the ultimate goal of the company is to maximize your work and minimize your salary.” He then suggested where I can maximize my salary and minimize work. That is why I joined insurance.

 

iBanding: Do you specialize in a type of insurance?

Fadzil: Currently, 2016, I am more focused on business value protection especially for Keyman, buy and sell agreement as well as share purchase agreement for those businessmen. I focus more on an exit plan for them. I am not saying that I am not focusing on other insurances like medical card, personal insurance or income protection. Yes, I still do those, but now I am just focused on Keyman and business protection.

For Life Insurance, I focus on endowment or investment link. Nowadays, most Malaysians focuses on investment link because they’ll have a portion of the investment. Previously, when you buy the insurance, you will get back some of the cover but let’s say if you were not involve in any accidents, you would not get anything. Though, for this investment link, you’ll get partially and that’s quite interesting to them.

 

iBanding: What is Keyman insurance? And when would you buy it?

Fadzil: The Keyman insurance is an exit plan for those businessmen, who need a huge cash reserve, in case something happen to them. We call it Sinking Fund. For example, I run a business and suddenly something happens to me. Question is, do I have enough Sinking Fund to continue my business? Another case is to make a legacy assurance for my business.

Yes, most businessmen claims to have enough Sinking Fund, but then it is just on papers, because they want to apply for loan with the bank. In reality, they don’t have that Sinking Fund. It is just on papers, that’s one. And two, to cover the potential loss of the company. For example, the turnover is about RM 50,000 a month. What happens if the key man (Keyman) is no longer with the business due to illness, death or even disability? The profit will drop.

 

iBanding: What’s the average sum insured for Keyman?

Fadzil: Two million, that’s the normal one.

 

iBanding: And is it only for death, disability or illness?

Fadzil: Yes, actually it is pretty flexible or custom made. For example, if the client wants the medical card, you can add on. The medical card is just a rider then. It is not a basic plan. The basic plan is death, disability and also critical illnesses. The others you can add on but of course, the premium will be higher too.

 

iBanding: What are the biggest mistakes Malaysians make in buying insurance?

Fadzil: They buy without knowing what they are buying. It is important that when you buy insurance, you fully understand what insurance you have and what it covers. Your agent needs to explain all the important details of the insurance to the customer. Many times it is not enough.

Most of my clients, when I ask them how much you pay for your insurance?  RM150/month. How much is your salary? RM4,000. It is not enough. Insurance should be roughly 10% of your salary. Then you can cover your income, when something bad happens. That is why most Malaysians are under-insured.

 

iBanding: For car insurance, what are the most common mistakes Malaysians make?

Fadzil: The most common mistake is that Malaysians buy Market Value motor policy and not Agreed Value motor policy. So, let’s say if you follow the Market Value, it is quite cheap compared to Agreed Value. But then, they don’t know the value of the car will depreciate. This means that the value of the car will go down over time. Let’s say, if something happens to your car tomorrow, the insurance company will pay you only Market Value. This amount is not enough to buy a new car. If you buy Agreed Value insurance, you always get the full amount that was agreed at the beginning.

Another common mistake is not to include cover for Flooding. When your car is damaged during flooding, most insurance companies will not pay for the damages, because Flood is a special “Peril”. It is not covered in your basic insurance. You need to specifically request it. This is especially important for Malaysians that live in areas that are flooded often.

 

iBanding: Since you’re focusing on Keyman, are you cross selling a lot of different insurance?

Fadzil: Yes, I do cross selling. Same goes to SME insurance, especially for those businesses that are having the petty cash inside the premise. For example, when they bring the money to the nearest bank, they get robbed on the way. This can be insured. It is called Money in Transit and part of the SME package insurance. Another important is Fidelity Guarantee. If your staff betrays you or steals from you, you can insure for that.

 

iBanding: Why do you think that they do not know? Is it not common?

Fadzil: Because it is not mass. Not everybody buys it. Most of the agent focuses on medical card, because it is easy to sell. That is why, when you open Facebook most of them will do copyrighting on medical card and unlimited medical card. That’s the thing, talking about household insurance, travel card insurance, and business insurance and so on, not many agents focus on them. The market is there, but not as big as medical card.

 

iBanding: What is your secret of success?

Fadzil: I’m not successful yet but going to. In my opinion, to be successful you need to be persistent and not giving up easily. Sometimes, when you do business you get into a down mood. Just don’t give up. Do what Will Smith in the movie did. The Pursuit of Happiness inspired me. When I am down, I watch that movie.

 

iBanding: What is the most challenging situation you have to overcome as an insurance agent?

Fadzil: To let people know that insurance is not a scam. Malaysians do not like to make commitment on having something that is intangible. So the challenge for me is to convert the intangible to become the tangible.

 

iBanding: Where do you think the insurance industry is heading next year? Where do you think it is heading 5 years from now?

Fadzil: The number one issue is Detariffication. It is challenge for the agent, because most of the foreign company will penetrate Malaysia in General. Liberty and Generali have recently entered Malaysia. Most of the Bumiputera companies have started to merge or start to sell their shares. It is a challenge because it is difficult for the agent to find new customers.

The Malaysian government hospital also starts to impose the FPP Program (Full Paying Patient). That is the trend I see when the government starts to de-subsidize those things. Those days when you enter the government hospital, you do not have to pay. Nowadays, the rate starts to increase. For example, if I were to have surgery in the government hospital, I can go fast but I would be paying the same rate with the private hospital. We would not be subsidized anymore. What I see, in 5 years, we Malaysians need life insurance, just like the Singaporeans. If you’re not a Fully Paying Patient you would have to wait. Only for those who has money, they would have the advantage, to go first or even choose which doctor and department they like.

Those days, you can’t do such, only in the private sector. These days, the government starts to implement it. That has tremendous effect on normal patients.

iBanding: Terima kasih kerana sudi bersama kami di Agent Spotlight. Boleh ceritakan sedikit tentang diri anda? Apakah latar belakang akademik anda dan apa anda lakukan sebelum sertai industri insurans?

Fadzil: Saya graduan UNIMAS (University Malaysia Sarawak), Kuching, Sarawak. Saya memiliki Ijazah Sarjana Muda dalam Pembangunan Sumber Manusia. Sebelum menceburi bidang insurans, saya bekerja sebagai pekerja sosial perubatan di UMMC (University Malaya Medical Centre), isteri saya masih di sana sekarang. Saya bekerja di UMMC lebih kurang 7 tahun. Tugas saya ialah membantu pesakit yang telah dirujuk oleh doktor untuk mendapatkan rawatan atau pembedahan tetapi tidak berkemampuan. Contohnya pesakit kanser yang memerlukan rawatan kos tinggi, saya akan bantu kendalikan dana bantuan mereka.

Bagi rakyat Malaysia, saya biasanya kendalikan dana seperti Tabung Kebajikan and Tabung Bantuan. Saya buat penilaian untuk mengenalpasti pesakit yang layak mendapat bantuan. Dari situ, saya mula tertanya mengapa ramai rakyat Malaysia, terutamanya kaum Melayu yang mampu memiliki insurans tetapi tidak membelinya. Ia bukan lagi soal kemampuan, tetapi soal kepentingan (prioriti). Disebabkan itu, saya memutuskan bahawa saya perlu lakukan sesuatu untuk membantu orang ramai.

 

iBanding: Telah berapa lamakah anda berada dalam industri insurans?

Fadzil: Ini tahun kelima saya.

 

iBanding: Anda kata rakyat Malaysia berkemampuan untuk memiliki insurans tetapi enggan berbuat demikian, kenapa ya?

Fadzil: Ianya soal prioriti. Contohnya, rakyat Malaysia apabila dapat gaji setiap bulan, apa prioriti pertama mereka? Nombor satu mereka akan bayar pinjaman rumah, kedua kereta mereka, ketiga belanja makanan, keempat untuk riadah atau untuk keseronokan dan kelima, keenam, ketujuh sehinggakan gaji tinggal kosong. Kemudian mereka akan gunakan kad kredit sehingga gaji sudah jadi negatif. Insurans terletak di nombor 20. Isunya, mengapa tidak beli insurans untuk lindungi nombor 1-7? Ianya prioriti berbanding kemampuan. Rakyat Malaysia mampu, cuma lebih suka berbelanja berlebihan dan guna kad kredit.

Masa saya bekerja di UMMC, kami perlu menilai pesakit secara menyeluruh sebelum menentukan sama ada untuk memberi bantuan. Semasa saya selidik kedudukan kewangan mereka, saya tahu mereka sebenarnya mampu miliki insurans. Cuma mereka terlebih berbelanja. Mereka tidak menabung. Mereka dapat gaji RM 3,000 tapi belanja RM 4,000. Jadi apabila sesuatu yang tidak diingini berlaku, mereka mula meminta bantuan. Sebab itulah saya berhenti dari situ dan sertai bidang insurans.

 

iBanding: Adakah itu punca utama anda menukar bidang kerjaya anda?

Fadzil: Ada 2 sebab. Satu kerana pengalaman saya di UMMC. Sebab kedua ialah matlamat peribadi. Pada mulanya saya tidak yakin dengan insurans. Saya agak ragu-ragu. Kerana, kita bayar tetapi kita tak dapat apa-apa darinya ketika kita sihat dan tiada apa masalah berlaku.

Satu ketika semasa saya menunggang motosikal ke Krabi bersama isteri saya, saya ada membeli insurans. Semasa berada di Lebuhraya Trang di Siam, 15km dari Krabi, kami kemalangan di mana kami mengalami kecederaan. Apabila kami pulang ke Malaysia, saya terima sejumlah wang yang besar dari polisi insurans kami. Dari situ saya sedar kita tidak perlu berbelanja banyak untuk insurans tetapi pampasannya lumayan ketika diperlukan.

 

iBanding: Mengapa anda pilih bidang ini sebagai kerjaya?

Fadzil: Peristiwa peribadi dan fleksibiliti yang ditawarkan. Sebenarnya ianya idea salah seorang mentor saya. Dia pernah berkata: “Bila kita bekerja, kita jadi serupa hamba”. Saya tanya kenapa. Dia jawab, “Bekerja sama seperti penghambaan kerana apa saja yang dibuat adalah untuk syarikat atau boss kita”. Lalu dia bertanya pula, “Tahukah apa dia matlamat utama syarikat?” Bila saya kata saya tidak tahu, dia sambung lagi, katanya: “Matlamat syarikat adalah untuk memaksimakan tugasan pekerja dan meminimakan gaji mereka”. Dia seterusnya cadangkan di mana saya boleh maksimakan kedua-dua gaji dan tugas saya. Maka itulah sebab saya sertai bidang insurans.

 

iBanding: Apakah pengkhususan anda dalam bidang insurans ini?

Fadzil: Buat masa ini, dan di tahun 2016, I fokus pada business value protection, terutamanya Keyman, dan menjual beli perjanjian dan juga persetujuan pembelian saham bagi ahli perniagaan. Saya lebih fokus kepada pelan keluar (exit plan) untuk mereka. Ini tidak bermakna saya tidak fokus pada polisi insurans lain seperti kad perubatan, insurans peribadi atau perlindungan pendapatan. Cuma saya lebih khusus pada Keyman dan perlindungan perniagaan.

Bagi insurans hayat, saya tumpukan pada endowmen atau insurans berkaitan pelaburan. Sekarang ini ramai rakyat Malaysia yang fokus pada insurans berkaitan pelaburan kerana mereka dapat pulangan pelaburan. Sebelum ini, apabila anda beli insurans, anda dapat balik sebahagian pampasan tapi jika tiada musibah berlaku, anda tidak dapat apa-apa. Melalui insurans berkaitan pelaburan, pelanggan dapat ganjaran yang menarik.

 

iBanding: Apakah insurans Keyman? Bilakah pula masa yang sesuai untuk memilikinya?

Fadzil: Insurans Keyman adalah suatu pelan keluar atau “exit plan” bagi ahli perniagaan yang memerlukan simpanan wang yang lumayan, sekiranya berlaku sesuatu yang tidak diingini. Ia digelar sinking fund atau kumpulan wang pelepas. Contohnya, jika saya memiliki perniagaan dan tiba-tiba sesuatu berlaku terhadap saya. Adakah saya memiliki kumpulan wang pelepas yang mencukupi untuk teruskan perniagaan saya? Satu lagi contoh ialah apabila saya inginkan jaminan legasi untuk perniagaan saya.

Iya, kebanyakan ahli perniagaan akan mengatakan mereka memiliki kumpulan wang pelepas mencukupi, tapi itu hanya pada kertas sahaja untuk membolehkan mereka memohon pinjaman bank. Pada hakikatnya mereka tidak memilikinya. Itu contoh pertama. Kedua pula adalah untuk menampung kerugian syarikat. Contohnya jika perolehan adalah RM 50,000 sebulan, apa akan berlaku jika key man (ahli utama) tidak lagi berada di dalam perniagaan kerana sakit, kematian atau hilang upaya? Keuntungan akan terjejas.

 

iBanding: Lazimnya berapakah jumlah yang diinsuranskan?

Fadzil: Biasanya 2 juta.

 

iBanding: Adakah ianya hanya melindungi kematian, hilang upaya atau penyakit?

Fadzil: Iya, ia sebenarnya sangat fleksibel dan boleh diubah-suai. Contohnya, jika pelanggan inginkan kad perubatan, ianya boleh disertai sekali. Kad perubatan itu hanyalah tambahan, ia bukan pelan asas. Pelan asas adalah kematian, hilang upaya dan penyakit kritikal. Boleh juga tambah pelan lain, tetapi premiumnya akan bertambah.

 

iBanding: Apakah kesilapan terbesar rakyat Malaysia dalam membeli insurans?

Fadzil: Mereka beli tanpa mengambil tahu apa yang dibeli. Ianya amatlah penting untuk memahami insurans yang dibeli, apa yang dilindungi. Ejen anda perlu jelaskan semua maklumat penting kepada pembeli. Selalunya ianya tidak memadai.

Kebanyakan pelanggan saya, jika saya tanya berapakah mereka bayar untuk insurans mereka? RM 150 sebulan. Gaji mereka? RM 4000. Ianya tidak cukup. Insurans sepatutnya lebih kurang 10% dari pendapatan anda. Barulah ia dapat lindungi pendapatan anda jika berlaku sesuatu yang tidak diingini. Sebab inilah ramai rakyat Malaysia yang terkurang insurans.

 

iBanding: Bagi insurans kenderaan, apa pula kesilapan lazimnya dilakukan oleh rakyat Malaysia?

Fadzil: Kesilapan paling biasa dilakukan ialah mereka membeli atas nilai pasaran dan bukan nilai bersetuju (agreed value). Jadi jika kita mengikut nilai pasaran, harganya lebih murah daripada nilai bersetuju. Tetapi mereka tidak memahami bahawa harga kereta akan menyusut. Ini bermakna nilai kereta akan berkurangan dari masa ke semasa. Jadi jika sesuatu berlaku pada kereta anda esok, syarikat insurans hanya akan memberi pampasan sebanyak nilai pasaran semasa tuntutan dibuat. Jumlah ini tidak cukup untuk membeli sebuah kereta. Jika anda membeli insurans mengikut nilai bersetuju, anda akan dapat jumlah penuh yang telah dipersetujui.

Satu lagi kesilapan lazim ialah tidak membeli perlindungan tambahan untuk melindungi dari banjir. Jika kereta mereka rosak disebabkan banjir, kebanyakan syarikat insurans tidak akan membayar pampasan, kerana banjir adalah suatu bencana alam. Ia tidak termasuk di dalam polisi asas. Anda perlu meminta untuk ianya ditambahkan ke dalam polisi anda. Ini penting terutama bagi mereka yang tinggal di kawasan yang sering mengalami banjir.

 

iBanding: Memandangkan anda fokus kepada insurans Keyman, adakah anda banyak melakukan jualan silang (cross selling)?

Fadzil: Iya. Saya ada melakukan jualan silang. Sama seperti insurans SME, terutama bagi syarikat yang menyimpan wang runcit di dalam premis. Contohnya, apabila mereka membawa wang tersebut ke bank, mereka dirompak di tengah jalan. Ini boleh dilindungi oleh insurans. Ia digelar Money in Transit dan adalah sebahagian dari pakej insurans SME. Satu lagi yang penting ialah Fidelity Guarantee, di mana jika anda ditipu oleh pekerja atau pekerja mencuri dari anda, itu juga boleh dilindungi insurans.

 

iBanding: Mengapa agaknya ramai yang tidak tahu tentang ini? 

Fadzil: Sebab ia tidak dihebohkan. Bukan semua membelinya. Kebanyakan ejen hanya tumpukan pada kad perubatan kerana ianya senang dijual. Sebab itulah kita sering jumpa iklan di Facebook tentang kad perubatan. Tidak ramai yang menceritakan tentang insurans perjalanan, perniagaan dan lain-lain. Pasarannya ada, cuma tak seluas kad perubatan.

 

iBanding: Apakah rahsia kejayaan anda?

Fadzil: Saya akan berjaya tetapi belum lagi. Pada pandangan saya, untuk berjaya kita perlu gigih dan tidak berputus asa dengan mudah. Kadang kala dalam perniagaan, kita alami mood yang kurang positif. Cuma jangan putus asa. Buat apa yang dilakukan oleh Will Smith dalam filemnya. The Persuit of Happiness sememangnya memberi inspirasi kepada saya. Saya tonton filem itu setiap kali saya merasa murung.

 

iBanding: Apakah situasi paling mencabar pernah anda tangani sebagai seorang ejen?

Fadzil: Pastinya ketika ingin menerangkan kepada orang ramai bahawa insurans bukan suatu penipuan. Rakyat Malaysia tidak suka komit dengan sesuatu yang dianggap tidak ketara atau bukan zahir. Jadi cabaran saya adalah untuk menukarkan apa yang tidak zahir kepada zahir.

 

iBanding: Pada pendapat anda, ke manakah arah tuju industri insurans pada tahun hadapan? Dan bagaimana pula 5 tahun akan datang?

Fadzil: Isu pertama ialah Detariffication (liberalisasi tarif insurans). Ianya akan memberi cabaran kepada ejen kerana banyak syarikat asing akan menembusi pasaran Malaysia. Liberty dan Generali sudah pun memasuki Malaysia baru-baru ini. Kebanyakan syarikat Bumiputra sudah bermula bergabung atau menjual saham mereka. Ianya mencabar, kerana ia menjadi sukar bagi ejen mencari pelanggan baru.

Pihak hospital kerajaan juga mula mengadakan program FPP (Full Paying Patient) atau Perkhidmatan Pesakit Bayar Penuh (PPBP). Ini trend yang saya perhatikan apabila kerajaan mula mengambil balik subsidi. Dulunya jika anda memasuki hospital kerajaan, anda tidak perlu membayar apa-apa. Tapi sekarang, kadarnya telah mula naik. Contohnya, jika saya perlu menjalani pembedahan di hospital kerajaan, saya dapat lakukan dengan cepat tetapi kadarnya sama seperti hospital swasta. Kita tidak akan dapat bantuan subsidi lagi. Pada pandangan saya, dalam tempoh 5 tahun, kita semua perlukan insurans hayat, sama seperti rakyat Singapura. Jika anda bukan pesakit bayar penuh, anda perlu tunggu giliran. Pada yang mampu, mereka dapat kelebihan, dapat perkhidmatan cepat atau dapat pilih doktor atau jabatan yang mereka kehendaki.

Dulu kita tidak boleh lakukan sebegini, hanya di hospital swasta. Tapi kini, hospital kerajaan juga sudah mula mempraktikkannya. Ianya memberi kesan kepada pesakit biasa.
