Digital Road Tax: 5 Things You Should Know https://ibanding.com.my/digital-roadtax-5-things-you-should-know-before-buying/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=digital-roadtax-5-things-you-should-know-before-buying https://ibanding.com.my/digital-roadtax-5-things-you-should-know-before-buying/#respond Tue, 11 Apr 2023 11:41:44 +0000 https://ibanding.com.my/?p=47909 The post Digital Road Tax: 5 Things You Should Know appeared first on iBanding Making better decisions.

]]>

Did you know that you are no longer required to display the road tax sticker on your car window? This is due to the Malaysian Transport Ministry (JPJ) effort to go digital. Now, Malaysians only need to have the digital copies of their road ta (digital road tax) and driving license on the official JPJ app on their smartphones.

Read more to find out what are the 5 things you should know about the new digital road tax.

  1. Do I need to buy road tax since I do not have to display it?
The obvious answer is, yes. Even though you do not need to display road tax on the window of your vehicle, you still need to have a valid road tax and driving license. The Transport Minister, Anthony Loke mentioned that those who drive without a valid road tax or driving license would face consequences of the law as usual.

  2. What happens during road blocks?
When you are stopped at a road block, you can show the digital copy of your road tax and driving license to the law enforcement officer via the JPJ app. However, the Transport Minister also mentioned that law enforcement officers will start using a special gadget, to scan vehicles as they pass by. There is no need to be worried about how to show your digital road tax if you do not have your smartphone with you at that moment.

  3. What happens if I drive someone else’s vehicle?
Not all of us can afford to own a car and it is completely understandable. If you are driving a family member or friend’s vehicle, law enforcement officers will do checks based on IC number (to check for a driving license) and number plate (to check for a road tax).

  4. Can I still choose to get a physical road tax sticker?
For now, yes. The Transport Minister mentioned that road users who are not ready for this new change, can still choose to buy road tax stickers or buy physical driving license at any JPJ counters. However, it may not be long until having a digital one becomes compulsory.

  5. How can I buy a digital road tax?
All you have to do is register for an account at JPJ’s web portal or the MyJPJ app, which can be downloaded from the App Store, Google Play Store or Huawei App Gallery. Once you have an account, you can proceed to buy or renew your road tax and driving license.

Below is a screenshot on how it will look in the app, once you have a digital copy of your road tax and driving license:

These are the 5 things that you should know regarding the new digital road tax. If you have more questions on this new system, you can send an email to [email protected], or contact the JPJ department’s hotline at 03-2724 2522.

Is There Roadtax Renewal Exemption in 2022? https://ibanding.com.my/is-there-roadtax-renewal-exemption-in-2022/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-there-roadtax-renewal-exemption-in-2022 https://ibanding.com.my/is-there-roadtax-renewal-exemption-in-2022/#respond Thu, 24 Mar 2022 12:50:09 +0000 https://ibanding.com.my/?p=47410 The post Is There Roadtax Renewal Exemption in 2022? appeared first on iBanding Making better decisions.

]]>

The Malaysian Transport Ministry (JPJ) last announced about the extension of deadline for roadtax renewal last year. This was great news to all road users in Malaysia as many people were financially affected due to the pandemic. How about this year? Are there any exemptions in 2022 for roadtax renewal? The simple answer is no.

Do I need to renew roadtax in 2022?

This is totally up to you and you can decide for yourself. Here are two situations to consider.

  • If you own a car and you use it, then yes.

    • You need to have a valid roadtax. There is no more exemptions given by JPJ to extend the deadline for roadtax renewal. If you drive without a valid roadtax, you will get pulled over and charged a fine by the law enforcement officers. However, note that your roadtax will be backdated following your car insurance active period. By renewing late, it does not help you save money.

  • If you own a car and do not drive it and plan to not drive it, then no.

    • You do not need to have insurance and road tax. Only when you choose to start using the car, you will need to buy insurance and road tax. You will save money on insurance and road tax while you do not use your car.

Where can I renew roadtax?

JPJ encourages road users to renew online using the MySikap JPJ or MyEG portal. However, if you are in a hurry, you also have the option to renew over the counter at any JPJ or Pos Malaysia outlets. All you have to do is schedule an appointment with them or walk in directly to the office.

Conclusion: Should I renew roadtax in 2022?

It depends. If you drive your car, it is always best to renew roadtax on time since there are no more exemptions given by JPJ. However, if you do not drive your car, then we advice you not to renew your roadtax and motor insurance. That way, you will save money for the period that your car is not driven.

The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) and the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) have recently come together in launching the year-long PIAM-MTA 2022 Nationwide Road Safety Campaign in Kuala Lumpur.

The campaign with the theme “steadybrader” aims to educate and remind road users on the importance of road safety. The total number of road accidents and fatalities are also hoped to be reduced by positively encouraging drivers to drive safely and steadily on the road.

Key government agencies, academicians from universities, organisations, representatives of member companies from different associations, and other media representatives participated in the event through the Zoom virtual platform.

Chairman of PIAM, Anthony Lee started off his speech by asserting the importance of road safety not only locally, but globally. He mentioned that road safety is among the reason for the World Health Organisation (WHO) calling the issue a public health crisis.

He said, “according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 1.25 million people globally perish every year due to road accidents. It is also the number one cause of death among youths aged between 15-29 years. By 2030, the WHO predicts that road traffic injuries will rise to become the fifth leading cause of death.”.

He also added that “Latest statistics from 2019 as provided by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) confirmed the total of 6167 fatalities due to road accidents; which amounts to about 17 fatalities per day due to road accidents. According to the Ministry of Transport, more than 80% of road accidents are due to “negligence.” These statistics on road accidents goes to show that this is a significant issue that has been ongoing and needs to be put to a stop.

Various activities have been planned out for the year-long campaign including:

  • Education programmes and quizzes on road safety

  • Community outreach initiative through gamification and utilisation of digital media

  • Collaborative efforts with government agencies and private organisations who share the same objective of reducing road accidents and fatalities

In delivering a keynote speech, YBhg. Datuk Lokman bin Jamaan, the Director of Enforcement Division of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) listed out some of the main causes to road accidents which includes speeding, using handphones while driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, driving against the flow of traffic and making illegal turns. He stresses again on the importance of road safety.

Before wrapping things up, a panel discussion titled ‘Road Safety – “A Shared Responsibility” was held as part of the launching of the campaign. The list of panellist for the discussion session included YBhg. Datuk Lokman bin Jamaan, Director of Enforcement Division of the Road Transport Department (JPJ), YDH. Supt Dr Bakri bin Haji Zainal Abidin, Principal Assistance Director (Enforcement), Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department of the Royal Malaysia Police, Bukit Aman (PDRM), Mr. Antony Lee, PIAM Chairman; and Encik Mohamed Sabri bin Ramli, MTA Deputy Chairman.

To conclude the event, PIAM and MTA agreed that the fight to reduce road accidents is a shared responsibility from government ministries, government agencies, private sectors, non-governmental organizations, down to ordinary citizens. PIAM and MTA also welcome government agencies and private sectors to aid them in saving lives by sharing their ideas on ways to reduce road accidents.

How To Get RM1,000 Flood Discount Voucher? https://ibanding.com.my/how-to-get-rm1000-flood-discount-voucher/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=how-to-get-rm1000-flood-discount-voucher https://ibanding.com.my/how-to-get-rm1000-flood-discount-voucher/#respond Tue, 25 Jan 2022 13:43:13 +0000 https://ibanding.com.my/?p=47227 The post How To Get RM1,000 Flood Discount Voucher? appeared first on iBanding Making better decisions.

]]>

The Malaysian government has announced that flood discount vouchers will be provided to all car owners who are victims of flood damaged cars. This is an initiative to help reduce the financial burden faced by them.

Malaysia has been hit by massive floods last December. As a result, about 50,000 cars were estimated to be damaged and stranded. To repair a flood damaged car, it can cost anywhere between RM1,000 to RM20,000 depending on the type of car. If you have flood protection in your insurance coverage, then your insurance company will cover the repair cost.

However, it is estimated that 95% of Malaysians do not have flood protection and are not aware of it. This means that a majority of Malaysian have to pay for the repair cost of their flood damaged cars on their own.

Who Is This Voucher For ?

This is an initiative of the Malaysian government called the “Keluarga Malaysia Automotive Discount Voucher”. This voucher of RM1,000 will be available to all car owners who have flood damaged cars. Car owners can use this voucher to cover part of the repair cost for their flood damaged car. Alternatively, they can also use this voucher to cover part of the cost for a car replacement if their car is deemed ‘total loss’.

How Can I Claim The Voucher ?

Flood affected car owners do not need to make any application for the discount vouchers. Follow the steps below to ensure that you get the flood discount voucher. About 1,800 car service centers and workshops across Malaysia have signed up to join the Keluarga Malaysia Automotive Discount Voucher initiative.

Step 1:
Walk-in to any registered service center or an authorised automotive dealer. You can refer to the list below on all the automotive companies that are participating in this initiative :
1. Proton, Perodua
2. Tan Chong Motors (Nissan)
3. UMW Toyota Motor
4. Honda Malaysia
5. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia
6. Volvo Car Malaysia
7. TC Euro Cars (Renault)
8. Mercedes-Benz Malaysia

Step 2:
Meet with a service personnel at the car service center or automotive dealer to request for this voucher. A service technician will then examine your car and confirm if it has been damaged due to the flood. You will be informed if your car is eligible for the voucher.

Step 3:
If you are eligible, the service center/automotive company will directly credit the RM1,000 voucher to your car repair invoice. You will receive an invoice from your service center/automotive company showing that RM1,000 has been deducted from your total car repair cost.

Is There A Deadline To Claim This Voucher ?

Yes. There is a deadline to claim this voucher. Flood damaged car owners can start claiming this voucher from now until 31st March 2022 only. After this period, car owners cannot claim this voucher even though they have a flood damaged car.

Conclusion

If you do not have flood protection in your insurance coverage and have a flood damaged car, make sure that you are quick to claim this voucher. The Keluarga Malaysia Automotive Discount Voucher is a good initiative to help reduce the burden of Malaysians who are affected by the flood. Even though the voucher value of RM1,000 is not sufficient to cover the full repair cost of your car, it will still be helpful to reduce your financial burden in a small way.

This add-on from AXA cost only RM30 and is an additional of 3.7% to the basic premium price.

Comparison 3: Syarikat Takaful Malaysia

Berjaya Sompo offers flood protection in their motor insurance policy as one of their benefits called “special perils coverage”. There is no need for an extra add-on to get your car protected against flood, storm, landslides and more.

The flood protection that Berjaya offers covers up to RM10,000 only or 20% of your sum insured, depending on which value is lower. This means that :

  • If your sum insured is RM10,000 then Berjaya will cover RM2,000 maximum for your car repair cost.

If you want the best flood protection, we advise you to choose AXA as it covers repair cost up to the full sum insured of your car. This means that your flood coverage will offer the same level of protection as your basic sum insured. In addition, it is also cheap at RM30 and only 3.7% extra to your basic contribution price.
