5 Common Mistakes When Buying Medical Insurance

Hi I’m Samuel, and I’m here today to talk about five common mistakes when buying medical insurance.

Mistake 1 – Delay in buying medical insurance

The most common mistake when people buy insurance is not buying at all, or even worse, they delay to buy medical insurance when it’s just too late.

You should never procrastinate purchasing a medical insurance as soon as you can afford to because you never know when illness or accident might hit you.

Buying insurance is a necessity in this day and age because the cost is really, really expensive if you were to pay it out of your own pocket.

Mistake 2 – Not disclosing full information

The second most common mistake I see in buying medical insurance is that the clients do not disclose their full medical history to the insurer or the agent.This is a very dangerous mistake and it could lead to your claims being rejected when you need it the most.

At the time when you are sick and have an accident, to have a rejection letter from the insurance company is not something you want to face.

Mistake 3 – Not reading fine prints

Third most common mistake when purchasing medical insurance would be not reading the finer points and the exclusions to your policy. Different policies have different exclusions and these exclusions range from types of treatments allowed, types of hospitals, and as well as the waiting periods. Some illnesses have longer waiting periods, some illnesses have shorter waiting periods. This is very crucial when you buy a medical insurance.

Mistake 4 – Insufficient coverage

Number four on the list would be insufficient coverage when purchasing when purchasing medical insurance. Some of your medical insurance policies which you purchased 5, 10 years ago might not be sufficient to cover the hospital charges and current day medical inflation goes about 10% per year in Malaysia and it’s very frightening to know that your medical card might not be enough and you need to top up your own cash.

Also sometimes clients rely too much on employer’s benefit for them and their family. This is very dangerous as this is not guaranteed and if they switch their jobs they might not have the coverage anymore.

Mistake 5 – Not doing comparison 

Lastly, the most common mistake I see throughout my career as an insurance agent would be clients not doing suitable comparisons for the coverage or with different companies or with different agents.

Do you have a life principle that you live by when interacting with customers?

The one thing I strive to do is to meet up with my prospects because I feel that calling is not enough. They may have doubts and in most cases, many of them don’t know what to ask. I’ll always make a point to meet up with them. I want them to understand what I’m offering and how my offer can benefit their lives in general.

Depends on their needs. But I’m also looking at the demand I receive from people living in Ipoh. Many of them lean towards medical insurance and naturally, that would usually be the product I will offer and bring to them.

Do you have a life principle that you live by when interacting with customers?

Generally, I get prospects who already know what they want from an insurance product. They would be people who would have studied a bit more on the product they want before coming to me. I consider them high-potential customers because of that. Their decision to buy is usually faster. Nonetheless, I will still have to conduct fact-finding and eventually educate them a little bit more just so they are very sure that that’s what they need.

What is your best recommendation for an insurance product to your customer?

In many occasions, I’ve met with people who already have some kind of protection plan. That is undoubtedly a good thing to know. It would also mean that their interest or knowledge about insurance is already one foot in the door.

Even more so, I find that sometimes the protection is not enough. And at the end of the day, the products that I recommend truly depends on their situation, their current or existing plan (whether they need a different protection or not), and just their current objective when searching for an insurance plan. Why do they think they need it?

Rapport. Getting to know my customers is very important. In the midst of conversations and having open communication with them— that is where I get to identify a product that can match them. This way I’ll be able to understand what they truly need. I’m also a firm believer in educating, being persistent and staying in touch with my customers from time to time.

Medical card. It is because many of my prospects and customers look for this product more than other types of insurance I sell.

Do you have a life principle that you live by when interacting with customers?

I feel that everybody and not just prospects will at some point need to understand what insurance is all about. I have a mix of different types of customers. Some have a good understanding of the product they are looking for. Then I have another group who don’t fully know insurance in general. They may have heard about a certain insurance product but they lack information.

And when they meet up with me, they won’t necessarily want to buy immediately, but they may want to use the advice or information I gave as, a reference to further study a product. That’s actually a smart thing to do and I always encourage that.

It usually depends on the customer needs. What is the purpose of their intentions to purchase? Is it for self-protection, is it to get protection for the family, or is it for only health purposes? No two customers are the same.

I think it’s important that I compile information about my customers. It can be in many different ways and the way I approach them about the information is equally as important. Typically I would ask customers their purpose for taking up insurance. Is it for self, for family or is it for health purposes or are they looking for insurance hibah?

As much as the purpose of taking up insurance is important, it helps to know how much they can or are willing to commit because with that information I’m able to make the right proposal that suits them.

It’s crucial to know those facts because, in the future, liabilities may change and can be different over time. In a way, this is part of a relationship building.

iBanding has made it again into the Malaysian newspapers. This time an article was published in “The Edge Malaysia”. Under the title “Bringing transparency to the agency force”, iBanding’s insurance agent directory was fully covered in one full page. The key benefits of Insurance Agent Directory were described in full detail. To our great amazement, the journalist Laili Ismail captured all the details very accurately. We could not have wished for more. Also mentioned were the Insurance Company Directory as well as  iBanding’s iBantu Mobile App that helps customers connect better with insurance agents.

The bottom part of the article highlights some of the preliminary results that we have gained through our annual Motor Insurance Survey.
