Today, we will try to find out where to find the cheapest car insurance in Malaysia. Many of us will look for cheap car insurance, when we need to buy insurance for our car. Car insurance in Malaysia is mandatory and comparing car insurance was not necessary last year because insurance price was the same across insurance companies. Finding cheap car insurance was not necessary.

This has changed for all Malaysians on July 2017 with the start of the Motor Detariffication. We have shared the good news on many of our articles. Now with different prices, it makes sense to compare and shop for cheap car insurance in Malaysia. So, who offers cheap car insurance in Malaysia?

Who has cheap car insurance in Malaysia?

One way to find the right insurance is to look for the cheapest insurance in price? At the moment, there is no webpage that offers on the spot price comparison between insurance companies.

iBanding offers manual comparison to its subscribers for selected insurance companies, so you can ask us to help you for free here. Because we get so many requests, please be patient, when we will provide you the comparison only the next day. We do it manually, so we need time. 😉

What people share about iBanding

We have done several hundreds of comparisons in the past and two companies stand out being most of the time the cheapest insurance for “most Malaysians”. We say most, because it depends on what type of driver you are to find the cheapest. Here are two type of drivers and the cheapest insurance for them.

The Cheapest Insurance For Two Types of Drivers

Driver Type 1: SAFE and SELDOM driver

The cheapest insurance IF you are a safe driver or only use the car on weekends is AXA FlexiDrive with Telematics. You can find out more about it in our article “AXA FlexiDrive Telematics insurance explained and reviewed”. The big IF is important, because AXA will rate your driving every month and calculate how much cash back you get. At the end of the year you can get up to 20% back on your insurance. This is the highest in Malaysia at the moment.

The good news is that you are fully in control if you get the 20% back or not. This is different from the cash back that Takaful companies provide.

The bad news is that if you are a bad driver, you will not get the full 20% back. If you are moderate safe driver, you still can get some cash back like 10%.

The GREAT news is that you will never pay more. Even if you are the worst driver ever, you do not need to pay more.

A nice benefit is that over-time you will drive automatically safer, because through a mobile app you get feedback on your safe driving skill.

How to get AXA FlexiDrive?

To get AXA FlexiDrive you will need to buy insurance from AXA and then schedule a time to install the device in your car. The installation takes less than 10 minutes and you can ask a technician to come to you to install, instead of going to a workshop.

+ even if you are not a safe driver you can still get discount like 10-15%

Disadvantages

– It is not offered as a Takaful insurance
– One -time refundable deposit of RM 70 for the device

Driver Type 2: Normal driver, but wants Takaful

Takaful Malaysia has been consistently the cheapest in the past few months. Besides the 10% online discount when you renew online, you can also get Cash Back at the end of the year, when the company performs well. So far it has been 15%. This is based on the principal of “Mudharabah”, where the profit is shared among the people who bought the insurance. Takaful insurance is not limited to Muslims. Anybody can buy a Takaful insurance and join in the principal of taking care of one another.

Besides the advantage of getting Cash Back, Takaful Malaysia also stands out for its complimentary Personal Accident insurance. You and your passengers will automatically receive the free insurance, when you buy from Takaful Malaysia. Takaful Malaysia is possibly the only company that offers it for free.

One of the ways we at iBanding is helping the public in choosing the right insurance company is by conducting a yearly survey to find out what the consumer think of their insurance and takaful companies. The findings obtained from the survey enable us to produce the ranking of most (if not all) motor insurance and takaful companies in Malaysia. Earlier this year, the winners of the 2017/18 Malaysian Motor Insurance and Takaful Award were given to these tops companies:[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Malaysian Motor Insurance and Takaful Award 2017/ 2018

With these rankings as a guide, we hope the consumers are able to make more informed decision when choosing the company to insure their cars.

And to those who intend to purchase theirs from Syarikat Takaful Malaysia, the number one motor takaful company as voted by the Malaysian consumer for two consecutive years, we hope that this article will help guide you through the process.

Guide to Purchasing Motor Takaful from Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Online

Let’s start

The car takaful plan from Syarikat Takaful Malaysia can be purchased online from their online portal called Click for Cover or here.

It is a well streamlined and easy to use web portal and we assure you that anyone can do it within a few minutes. However, to ensure accuracy of information, it is advised that you have your vehicle registration card or renewal notice from your previous insurance / takaful company ready.

The first thing you need to do is key in a few information such as your NRIC number, car registration number (plate number), postcode and email address.

car insurance online quotation

Step 1 – Get Quotation

If there’s a tricky part about the purchasing process, this could be it. But if you have a good knowledge about your car, or if you have your card with you, this step shouldn’t be an issue.

Information required here is largely vehicle and model-specific, such as variant, import type (local assembly, complete knocked down etc), type of anti-theft device fitted. You are also required to disclose what type of parking you have at your residence, if the car is still under bank loan and how many permitted drivers will be driving the car.

requirements and details for car insurance online

Remember: It is important to ensure that all information provided is CORRECT. This is to avoid your claims getting rejected by the insurance company!

Once you’ve entered all the info, you should be able to see the preliminary price for your car takaful on your right.

Rebate 10%

This is the discount that you get for buying (or renewing) your insurance (or takaful in this case) online. This discount is not specific to Syarikat Takaful Malaysia. You should be getting this discount when buying directly from any insurance and takaful companies ONLINE.

Cash Back

It says: You may be entitled to an estimated Cash Back subject to financial performance, applicable tax deductions and no claims incurred during the coverage period.

According to Syarikat Takaful Malaysia, they are the only takaful operator to consistently offer this cash back as a reward for their clients who have not made any make within the coverage period. For more explanation about cash back, read here.

Personal Accident Coverage

As a Takaful Malaysia’s customer, you are entitled to a RM15,000 Personal Accident coverage for each passenger and driver. This comes at no additional charge to you.

online car insurance prices

Step 2 – Add Additional Coverage

Here you can add additional coverage that you would like to have. One of these is mandatory for you to add and that is the Named Drivers. Here you need to key in the number of drivers allowed to drive your car and be covered by your insurance policy. The first two drivers are free. You will not be able to leave this page as long as you have not put in a number.

Other additional coverage that you may choose are:

  • Cover for Windscreens, Windows and Sunroof (highly recommended!)
  • Legal Liability to Passengers
  • Legal Liability of Passengers
  • Strike, Riot & Civil Commotion
  • Inclusion of Special Perils
  • Compensation for Assessed Repair Time (CART)
  • Extension of Cover to Thailand

All these come with a brief and helpful description. Once you add them to your policy, you will notice the quoted price to the right changes.

additional cover for online car insurance

Step 3 – Certificate Owner Info

Easy step of keying in your personal and contact information.

Step 4 – Driver Info

Another easy step. Here you need to fill in the name, NRIC number, gender and relationship of the ‘named drivers’. The number of drivers that you will need to fill is according to the number chosen by you in step 2. If you only chose 1 driver, then there isn’t much for you to do here. Simply continue.

Step 5 – Confirm & Pay

Time to check that everything is alright and make payment.

Please note here that it says:

You will have to bear a compulsory excess of RM400 in the event of claim if your vehicle is driven by a person who is not named in your certificate or if the driver holds a Learner (L) driver’s licence. The excess is the first amount that you have to bear in respect of each and every claim.

So make sure that if your car is often driven by others, such as a spouse, a sibling, friend or child, they are nominated as named drivers in step 2. As mentioned, the first 2 (this includes you) are free. The rest are chargeable at RM10 per person.

Once you are happy with the coverage, you can make payment via credit card or bank transfer. The transaction is swift and secured. Voila. You have yourself a takaful cover for your car, at a 10% direct discount, and 15% cash back if you don’t make a claim within the next 12 months.

Did you know that in 2017, Honda Malaysia achieved a record-breaking increase in sales of 19% with a total of 109,511 units sold? This made it the highest in the history of Honda Malaysia since its establishment in 2003.

Honda is no doubt one of the most popular car makers in the country, known not only for its innovative features and looks that appeal to the public but also it is relatively low cost as a reliable personal vehicle.

But that is not all. There are other advantages that Honda car owners get to enjoy that make owning a Honda car a wiser decision, especially to the cost-conscious consumer.

What advantages? Well we’re glad you asked. If you are a Honda car owner yourself and have not heard of the Honda Insurance Package, you don’t know what you’re missing out on.

Honda Insurance Package – a privilege to the Honda car owner

Honda Insurance Package or HIP is comprehensive car insurance coverage offered by Honda Malaysia exclusively to Honda car owners that give more than just protection to your cars.

However, sad as it may be, many among the Honda car owners themselves who are not aware of this unique offering that is only made available to them when they renew their yearly insurance policy through an authorized Honda dealer.

honda car owner

Below are the advantages that you enjoy from HIP

1. 100% genuine parts

Restoration and repairs are taken care of by a panel of workshops endorsed by Honda. These panel workshops comply with Honda’s quality standards where only genuine parts are used. HIP ensures that all these parts come with a 6 month warranty or 10,000km service warranty.

2. Agreed value up to 10 years

Here’s another privilege you’d not want to let go, especially because not all insurers in Malaysia offer comprehensive covers based on agreed value. Under HIP, not only it does so, but it also provides it for the first 10 years, with the sum insured that is based on purchase price for the first year while subsequent years’ sum insured that is based on the recommended ISM Valuation Price.

To understand the advantages of insuring your car based on agreed value, check out this article (in Bahasa Malaysia).

3. No betterment cost

Betterment occurs when in the course of repairing an accident-damaged vehicle, an old part is replaced with a new franchise part. In line with the principle of indemnity, you will have to bear the difference in costs as you are in a better position after the accident with the new franchise part (Insuranceinfo). The industry rate for betterment is as follows:

However, under HIP, you bear NO BETTERMENT COST for up to 10 years!

4. No excess

Unlike other insurance policies, HIP guarantees that no access is payable (other than compulsory access) in the event of a claim. This means that HIP will pay 100% of the cost for repair while others may impose a certain amount of excess based on the age and model of the vehicle, as well as policyholder’s years of driving experience and claim records.

5. Speedy claim process

HIP guarantees speedy claim approval for value under RM20,000 for Honda vehicles repaired at any Honda Authorized Body and Paint Centre. These dealers are able to provide assistance and support in following up with insurance company and advise on claims procedure.

Anymore? Of course there are!

  • The Honda Insurance Package is underwritten by a trusted panel of insurers comprising of MSIG, Tokio Marine Insurance, Berjaya Sompo, Liberty Insurance, AIG Malaysia, Allianz General Insurance, Etiqa and Zurich Takaful.
  • 100% reimbursement.  HIP covers 100% of your sum insured for the first 10 years in the event of total loss or theft. This is unlike other comprehensive policies that provide a cover of only up to the market value of the vehicle at the time of loss.
  • 24 hours emergency assistance. HIP offers emergency towing service to the nearest Honda Panel Insurers
Workshop up to 450km (round trip by the tow truck) for free. Roadside Repair Service that offer free labour charges up to RM200.00 per event (exclusive of spare parts) is also available for jump-start or battery replacement, tyre-changing and fuel refill services.

How to start enjoying these privileges under HIP?

  1. Visit any Honda Authorized Dealership that are HIP panels or call 1800-18-1177.
  2. Request for a quotation for insurance or takaful for your vehicle. Don’t forget to also ask for any additional coverage that you may want.
  3. Choose the preferred insurer and get insured under HIP!

Useful terms:

Agreed value vs market value

Your car can be insured based on Agreed Value or Market Value. When you insure your car with market value, the premium is calculated based on the current market value of the vehicle at the time of policy renewal. The pay-out amount should there be a claim, will base on the market value at the time of the claim. Considering that some time may have passed, the vehicle would have depreciated in value. Should you have to claim due to a total loss or theft, the pay-out will certainly be less.

Agreed value is when the sum insured is based on the amount agreed by the insurer. This is usually based on the car model and year of make. When you insure your car with agreed value, you get 100% pay-out should there be a total loss or theft.

Excess

Also known as deductible, excess is a fixed amount that you have to fork out if you make a claim. There are two types of excess:

i) Compulsory excess

– a fixed RM 400 excess is applicable in any of the 4 conditions below:

When during an accident, your car was driven by a person:
a) not named in your motor policy
b) who is under 21-years old
c) who is holding an L license
d) who holds a full driving license of less than 2 years

ii) Other excess

– Amount imposed by the insurer based on certain considerations, such as age of vehicle and driver’s years of driving experience. (ibanding.my)

Roadside Assistance: What is it and Why Do I need It? https://ibanding.com.my/roadside-assistance/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=roadside-assistance https://ibanding.com.my/roadside-assistance/#comments Wed, 20 Dec 2017 03:40:22 +0000 https://ibanding.com.my/?p=34799 The post Roadside Assistance: What is it and Why Do I need It? appeared first on iBanding Making better decisions.

What is roadside assistance?

Roadside assistance is a form of protection when your car breaks down while on the road. Typically professional assistance is just a phone call away. It’s like your safety net when your car fails on you and you have no clue what to do.

In Malaysia, you can pretty much get roadside assistance cover when you buy a car insurance with a basic cover. The roadside assistance cover makes up to a more comprehensive coverage.

While that may be the case, some insurance companies offer roadside assistance cover on its own too. Which means if your car doesn’t have a roadside assistance cover yet, you can purchase it as an add-on.

Roadside assistance usually includes a number of services. Although the kind of services will vary between providers, here are some of the most common inclusions in roadside assistance products.

1. 24-hour emergency towing assistance

This service can be incredibly handy when your car breaks down and it’s not possible to repair it on the spot. The service provider will usually assist you to tow it to your preferred location.

Although towing location can be entirely your choice, there may be charges if the towing exceeds a specified mileage limit set by the insurance company.

2. Minor roadside repairs

Once upon a time, we could perform a fair amount of DIY repairs on our vehicles when we faced with a vehicle breakdown. It was probably way easier back in the day because cars weren’t so complicated then.

But with today’s complex, more intricate engine systems and mechanical build up, it’s probably wise to get a professional to have a look at the problem.

Roadside technicians are likely to assess your vehicle on the spot to see what needs to be fixed and if it can be fixed right away. But usually, they would have already done a brief assessment of your breakdown via phone when you call in for help. So before they get to the breakdown site they would’ve already had an idea of what to do.

The one thing that you will need to keep in mind is that they will only cover the labor cost. If there are additional spare parts required, you may need to pay for the cost of the spare parts.

Here are some common minor roadside repairs and assistance:

  • Fuel delivery
  • Battery replacement
  • Jump-start your vehicle
  • Fuses replacement
  • Fit new drive belt
  • Repair hose damaged fittings
  • Other basic fixes

However, if the problem is a lot more serious, they’ll arrange for a tow.

3. Flat tire, help!

A flat tire can be such a nuisance when you are on your way to an important appointment. All dressed up and getting grease on your clothes is just not how you want your day to go.

The safety aspects of fixing a flat tire by the roadside with fast cars driving by could also hinder you from fixing your flat tire. So changing flat tires is always a common type of service offered under the roadside assistance program.

roadside assistance with flat tire

4. Other services

The service listed above are the most commonly included in a roadside assistance service. But some insurance companies include additional services that can cater to situations you may not have even thought of until you really face some serious car trouble on the road.

Alternative travel assistance – In case you get stranded somewhere because of a car breakdown or an accident, roadside assistance can help to arrange for a taxi, make hotel reservations or rent a car.

When you need to bring your car back to Malaysia – Some insurance companies offer services to tow your car back to Malaysia in case you have car trouble outside of Malaysia. Typically, roadside assistance is extended to provide towing services in neighboring countries such as Singapore, Thailand, and Brunei.

Ambulance – When you’ve just had an accident and are injured, roadside assistance can also help to arrange for an ambulance pick-up to bring you to the nearest hospital.

Notify family members – They can help to relay messages to your friends and family that you’ve just met with an accident.

Family and friends roadside assistance – Some insurance companies extend their roadside assistance cover to your family and friends’ vehicles. The only condition is that you must be in their vehicle too.

Keynotes to look out for in a roadside assistance

  • Is this roadside assistance available 24/7?
  • How can I get hold of roadside assistance when I get into car trouble?
  • Is there a limit to the number of call-outs for assistance?
  • Is technical advice included in the roadside assistance hotline?
  • What are the geographical limits to my roadside assistance? Does it include assistance when I go off-road?
  • Are there any financial limits for the different services or benefits offered?

Roadside assistance may vary between each insurance companies. Ultimately each one will have terms and conditions that are not the same.

So it’s always wise to read up your policies to fully understand what you are covered for to avoid surprises when you really do have car trouble.

Companies that offer better Roadside Assistance

There are only a few companies that offer a more comprehensive roadside assistance service as an add-on to their motor insurance policy. Allianz for instance, offers a product called “Enhanced Road Warrior” that you can buy in addition to your normal motor insurance cover.

Allianz Enhanced Road Warrior

Free Replacement Car

Up to 7 days

24 hour Emergency Towing

Unlimited Towing Distance. Call 1-300-88-6278

Flood Coverage

Pays damages up to RM 1,500

It’s definitely worth to have and shop around for

If you’ve got your car insurance and road tax covered before your next renewal due date, that’s good. But did you check if you already have a roadside assistance? And if you have do you know what exactly is included in your roadside assistance cover?

Roadside assistance services may be seemingly small to you but when you have to fork out your money unexpectedly while on the road, shaken by an accident or simply stranded somewhere with no clue on how to fix your vehicle, roadside assistance will be your rescue on that day.

Not having roadside assistance is like taking a chance at your money. And if you already have one, get to know your roadside assistance services.

If you buy your insurance directly from the insurance company, you get 10% discount on your premium. This is great because it offers the lowest possible price for you from that particular insurance company.  If you buy the insurance from a Takaful company, you might even be entitled to a 15% rebate when you renew your motor insurance. This means next year, you can save up to 25% on your motor insurance.

SPEED & CONVENIENCE: BAD

To buy insurance from the insurance company directly, you need to find out where the nearest insurance branch is. This is less convenient than buying from Pos Malaysia because Pos Malaysia has more than 700 locations. Allianz Malaysia, one of the largest motor insurer has only 35 branches. You need to be careful when choosing a branch because some branches only sell Life insurance and not Motor Insurance. Also, you have to go out and buy yourself the insurance from the counter to get the 10% discount, because you need to show your IC. If you want to buy the road tax at the same time, you will also need to check fi the branch offers road tax renewal on the spot. Only a few branches have the machine to print out the road tax. We categorized the SPEED & CONVENIENCE BAD, because of those inconveniences.

SALES ADVICE: BAD

The disadvantage of buying from the insurance branch is that you need to have some knowledge of insurance to know which insurance company you want to buy from. So in advance, you need to know how good the insurance company is. Also, you need to know if the insurance company that you want to go, offers the right price for you. If you want to compare the insurance from different companies, you will need to go to each one of them to find out the price. With MyEG and Pos Malaysia, you can choose from different insurance companies at one location. When you go to the insurance branch, you can only choose from that insurance company.

If you want to research about the quality of the insurance company, you can read our article 2016 Malaysia Motor Insurance Award to find our ranking.

If you buy insurance at the insurance branch, you also need to check beforehand if they offer road tax renewal on the spot, as not all branches have the capability to issue road tax immediately.

CLAIMS SUPPORT: NEUTRAL

When you are involved in an accident, you can walk into the same insurance branch you purchased your insurance from to file a claim. You can speak with the person in charge face-to-face, so you can get help in making the claim. This is much better than having to wait on the line with the call center or waiting for an email response. Here you can just walk into the branch and find a person responsible for claims.

Buying insurance ONLINE DIRECT from the insurance/takaful branch

PRICE: GOOD

If you buy your insurance online direct from the insurance company, you get 10% discount on your premium. This is great because it offers the lowest possible price for you from that particular insurance company.  If you buy the insurance from a Takaful company, then you might even be entitled to 15% rebate, when you renew your motor insurance. This means next year, you can save up to 25% on your motor insurance.

You can find a list of insurance companies that offer insurance online in our article Advantages and Disadvantages of Buying Motor Insurance Online in Malaysia.

SPEED & CONVENIENCE: BAD

Similar to buying directly from the branch, the disadvantage of buying online direct is that you need to have some knowledge of insurance. You need to know which insurance company is the best for you and what insurance product to select.

If you buy insurance online, you will need to buy the road tax separately on your own. Most insurance companies do not combine the purchase of insurance with road tax like MyEG does.

SALES ADVICE: BAD

The quality of sales advice you get is similar to buying insurance from MyEG. You need to have some knowledge of insurance and know from which company you want to buy online from. Compared to insurance branches buying online is good and bad at the same time. It is good, because if you want to compare prices among companies, you do not need to go to each one of them physically instead you can do so online. It is bad however because you do not have a person that you can ask questions. You need to find the information on your own on the internet.

CLAIMS SUPPORT: NEUTRAL

Unlike buying your motor insurance online through MyEG, you still have insurance branches that you can go to. You can then speak to someone in person to get help with your insurance claim. We ranked it as NEUTRAL because in case the insurance company denies you the claim, you are on your own to figure things out. Insurance staff makes mistakes, so you want to have someone you can consult with.

Buying from full-time insurance/takaful agents

In our yearly survey to find the best motor insurance company in Malaysia, we found that Malaysians largely buy their insurance from an agent. In 2016, 34% of our survey respondents bought through an agent. You can read more about the award here. So we are curious to see how good the insurance agents are compared to the other channels.

PRICE: NEUTRAL

We have ranked buying from an insurance agent as neutral, because it really depends on how efficient your insurance agent is and how well you know him. If your insurance agent is a family member, then there might even be a chance that you will receive part of the commission back. On the other hand, it is not BAD like Pos Malaysia, because you pay for the extra service that a good agent is providing you.

SPEED & CONVENIENCE: GOOD

Buying from an insurance agent offers the best possible service you can get, especially if you choose a reliable agent. Picking the right agent is critical as they not only put your needs before theirs but can also help you in picking the right insurance product. Buying through an insurance agent also is the most convenient way of purchasing your insurance, because filling out all the necessary forms, payment, collection and delivery of road tax are all done through the agent.

When it comes to speed, not all insurance agents will be able to give you the road tax together with the insurance on the spot like Pos Malaysia or an insurance branch. However, some agents have their own Road Tax device from MyEG that allows them to issue the road tax. You can identify them by their MyEG sign at their office. Often times, the places are labeled as MyEG Kiosk.

SALES ADVICE: GOOD

Large agencies can represent more than one insurance company. These agents can help you compare prices among insurance companies to find the cheapest. This is important because with the motor detariffication starting July 1st, each insurance company will offer a different price for you. Read more about the Motor Detariffication in our article Malaysian Motor Detariffication.

CLAIMS SUPPORT: GOOD

Insurance agents play an important role in accidents. When you are involved in a road accident or if your car is stolen, a good insurance agent will be able to guide you what to do and what not to do. The agent will be able to advise what the insurance company will cover and pay for. A great agent will even fill out the claims form for you and collect all the necessary documents to file the claim with the insurance company.

Even though speed and convenience are bad when buying directly online from insurance and takaful branch, the claims support that each channel offer is quite neutral. On top of that the price that both channel offer is good.

At least you’ll know that you’ve paid a good price for a reasonable support and service after you have secured yourself a car insurance. The long-term value is what’s important.

Meanwhile, buying from a full-time insurance/takaful agent will guarantee you a good after-sales service. You’ve already done thorough research on the insurance product you want but knowing that your insurance agent has a good background, personality and positive attributes is an assurance that they will always have your back even after years of renewing your car insurance with him/her.

Good news for e-hailing drivers in Malaysia! MSIG Insurance (M) Bhd (MSIG Malaysia) has launched E-Hail E-Zee, the first of its kind motor insurance cover in the country.

With E-Hail E-Zee, drivers of e-hailing services like Uber and Grab can offer their services to the public with a peace of mind knowing that they can now protect themselves and their passengers better.

“Until now, drivers providing e-hailing services were at great risk of substantial financial losses if they have an accident while carrying
passengers, not only from damage and injuries caused by the accident itself, but also from potential legal action by passengers if they sue the driver,” said MSIG Malaysia Chief Executive Offier Mr. Chua Seck Guan.

MSIG has been liaising with various parties such as Bank Negara Malaysia and Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) to create this approved add-on insurance.

“It has been reported that new laws will come into place in the near future which will require e-hailing drivers to ensure that they are properly insured for e-hailing services, but they can actually purchase our E-Hail E-Zee insurance right now,” added Mr. Chua.

MSIG E-Hail E-Zee motor insurance add-on will provide authorized e-hailing drivers with the following cover when they are providing e-hailing services:

  •  Loss or damage to the vehicle due to accident
  •  Loss or damage to the vehicle due to fire or theft
  •  Loss or damage to third-party’s vehicle or property
  •  Death or injury to third-party involved in an accident
  •  Legal liability to passengers and legal liability of passengers
  • Accidental Death or Permanent Disablement to the driver

The cost of MSIG’s E-Hail E-Zee is based on risk factors of the individual policyholder. Therefore it will vary depending on several factors such as the vehicle’s sum insured and the policyholder’s details. However according to MSIG Malaysia, it will still be a relatively affordable. For example, a standard vehicle that is below 1.5 CC with full 55% No Claim Discount (NCD) can enjoy the coverage with an additional premium ranging between RM0.30 to RM0.70 a day.

Not a fan of reading the terms and conditions of your insurance policy? Don’t blame you, nobody does. They are one of those things we neglect until after we’ve found ourselves in hot soup. So here we’ll make it easier on you, our readers, and list down several common reasons why your car insurance claim may be rejected.

5 Common Reasons Why Your Car Insurance Claim Might Get Rejected

1. Unnamed driver

Did a member of the family, a relative, a colleague or a friend drive your car when the accident happen? Guess what. Your insurance policy only covers you, the car owner. Now this does not mean that no one else can drive your car, it only means that for you to extend the same coverage to them, you will need to register them as the “named drivers” in your car insurance policy. But all is not lost. If there has been an accident involved an unnamed driver, you simply have to pay an ‘excess’ of RM400.

In Malaysia, you are allowed to include two drivers in your motor policy for free. Any additional driver will cost additional RM 10.

2. No police report

If you are unclear of the procedures that follow a car accident, you need to read this accident guide.

One of the most crucial things you need to do after an accident is filing a police report within 24 hours of the incident. This is something you do not want to take lightly! If you don’t file a report or file a report during the specified period, your insurance company has the right to reject the report as well as your claims.

So tarry not! Off you go to the police station as soon as an accident occurs. You really don’t want to have to fork out thousands of ringgit in repair cost just because you decided to postpone this task to the next day. Also, don’t just go to any police station, make sure you find the closest balai polis trafik!

3. Cause your policy doesn’t cover that

Many people assume a car insurance policy naturally covers every single aspect of the car as far as damages and lost go. Well not true. For instance, if you have a Third Party cover, your policy won’t even cover the cost of repair for YOUR OWN CAR! That’s right. Any accident involving your car, even if you’re not at fault, will not be covered by your insurance company. But no fret, if you’re not at fault and if the other party has a valid insurance cover, you can just claim against their policy.

Some other good examples that you need to know that is not covered by your policy, even if it’s a Comprehensive cover, are as below:

7 Dreadful Instances Your Motor Insurance Does Not Cover

4. Failure to disclose vital information

When renewing your car insurance, especially if you are doing it on your own, such as through the insurance company’s online portal, make absolutely certain you got all the information correct. With detariffication, more information is now needed for insurance companies to determine the price of your policy. For instance, some insurers require information about the type of your parking garage. A secured, private garage has a lower risk of theft compared to one that is unsecured and open. So if you got some of this information wrong, you may have just given a reason for your insurer to reject your claim.

5. Drunk driving or driving under the influence

Well you really shouldn’t be drinking and driving or driving under the influence of any dangerous drugs. If you are involved in an accident while being drunk, not only your claims will be rejected, you will be charged with a fine and may even face jail time.

So take heed, never drive while under the influence. You may think you’re a great and careful driver even when slightly drunk. But if you’re involved in an accident even if it was some nitwit who just got his license two days ago who hit you from behind, guess what? That’s right. No claims for you.

Other reasons you need to know about

  • Using private car for commercial purpose – if you met with an accident, your insurer has the right to reject your claims.
  • Under-insurance – this may not result in an out right rejection, however you will be subjected a much lower claimable amount.

So your claim got rejected. Now what?

If you think that your claim was unfairly rejected, find out if there is a chance to appeal. If not, or if you have appealed and still do not get a desired outcome, your option is to send your dispute to PIAM (Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia), Bank Negara Malaysia or Ombudsman Financial Services. To read about how you can go about with the appeal read this article.

If you have any bad experiences with regards to an insurance claim, or have questions about it. Forward your queries here.

Insurance, in general, is one of the fundamentals of a personal financial protection. We can safely go so far to say that it is quite vital to have in our lives. This includes having a car insurance which, in Malaysia is compulsory for every car owner to have.

Yet, despite the mandatory requirement, it still is, to some, a confusing and to a certain extent remains a skepticism to a lot of folks. Perhaps the degree of complexity of insurance in general, or the posture of those who are selling it, or maybe it is our own preference to avoid it contributes to us becoming unknowledgeable about the subject.

But armed with proper information, your decision-making process can be simplified tremendously and eventually you’ll be able to arrive at the right choice for both you and your family.

For someone who is new at buying or renewing their car insurance, or not so new but is still unsure of not just the buying/ renewing processes but especially the claims procedure, here’s your absolute best way to go about doing it.

Buying from a full-time insurance/Takaful agent is a good way to get started. When you have zero knowledge about car insurance, they are the best people to advise and perhaps even educate you about car insurance and help you out when you need to make a claim.

They are equipped with product training and will know how to explain the technical terms and coverage in a simplified manner to you. And the best thing is that they can usually come to where you are anytime you like and even remind you of your insurance renewal way in advance.

Dramatic photos of the aftermath of the recent floods that hit Penang are showing homes filled with waist-deep water and floating cars. Local newspapers reported the flood incidents as one of the worst that has ever hit Malaysia in 40 years. But these images have also triggered a question: Do we all need flood cover?

It’s obvious that the risk of floods is no small matter and can have a serious impact on a car owner’s financial well-being. So we take a look at why you need flood cover for your car.

1. Flash-floods happen frequently in Malaysia

Malaysia usually experiences two monsoon seasons in a year. The Southwest Monsoon season usually happens from May to September and the Northeast Monsoon season starts from November up to March the following year. This means every year you can expect heavy downpours and for anyone living in low-lying areas the possibility of flash floods happening every year is definitely high.

Recently reported flood-prone areas according to infobanjir.

Perlis – Berseri

Kelantan – Pasir Mas, Tumpat, Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai

Kedah – Padang Terap

Terengganu: Marang, Setiu

Pulau Pinang – Timur Laut, Seberang Perai Tengah

Pahang – Raub, Kuantan

2. Flood-damaged cars can cost a bomb to repair

The severity of damages to a car that has been caused by floods can vary. The worst damage can cost a car owner up to RM 50,000 to repair. Cars that are fully submerged while engines are still dead will not have major damages where the cost to repair won’t be as high.

But if a car is fully submerged and car owner attempts to start the engine, the electric control unit (ECU) will be shorted out.For an average car, this repair work can cost up to RM 7,000 and a whopping RM 30,000 for a BMW!

Source: The Star

3. Your current car insurance may not cover Damages Due to flood

You might assume that in a tropical country like Malaysia, with frequent flash floods every year, your policy includes automatic coverage for damages to your car due to flood. Perhaps it’s time to check your policy again.

Even though you may own a Comprehensive cover, it does not necessarily include coverage against flood! Flood coverage is usually offered by insurance companies as an add-on option. The cover falls under special perils such as flood, earthquakes, storms, typhoons, landslides, and volcanic eruptions.

This, of course, requires an additional premium of 0.5% from the total sum insured of your vehicle. That may sound like a lot to top-up in addition to your car insurance premium, but it’s always best to re-evaluate your need for a flood cover.

Here is an estimate of how much you may need to add-on.

Sum Insured: RM 30,000

Base Premium : RM 1,059.50

No Claim Discount (55%): RM 582.73

Base Premium: RM 476.77

Flood Cover (0.5% from sum insured): RM 150.00

Subtotal: RM 626.77

Subtotal after rebate (10%): RM 564.09

Total premium you need to pay after GST and Stamp Duty:  RM 607.94

While it makes a lot of sense for someone who lives in flood-prone areas to take up flood cover, it may also make sense for someone who drives frequently in flood-prone areas to consider getting the flood coverage.

While flood could be important to you, there are other additional covers you may want to consider. Read more on additional coverage for your car here.

Parting Thoughts

Usually, car owners are tempted to opt for the cheaper premium and more often than not they tend to miss some important coverage that they should seriously be considering given the risk factors that they are exposed to.

In other instances, car owners tend to assume that their cars are covered for damages due to other causes when it’s not. Check out 7 other instances that your car insurance does not cover.
